Any west LA peeps wanna do a ride midday saturday?

I gotta spend tomorrow in Santa Barbara, but I'll be back Saturday round noon. Anyone want to do a nice ride round SM, Venice, etc... and maybe hit some of the lower end bars that the fine area has to offer? Bikes, beer, sun...it practically sells itself.

i would call and make sure Bill Ron's is gonna be open. I've ridden down there a couple times during open hours and it's been closed. I think he had a new baby recently and was only around the shop by appointment. He may be back on a regular schedule now though.
I love going in that place. It's about as real of a bike shop as you'll find. I always feel a bit of a poser in there, not cause Bill is anything but nice, but you know he's seen the best come and go. It's definitely a place for reverance-of all that's good about cycling. the shop is basically his garage open to the public and you know what you see is only the tip of the iceberg.
I work on saturdays otherwise i'd ride down there...

How far of a ride from SM is it? I've never ridden down to Redondo beach from SM, but I'm thinking of taking my bike back to LA when I'm there for a week around xmas time and taking a ride down to billron's. Is it ridiculous to ride? Cuz I know by car it take a bit of time, mainly cuz I have to take 405.

Love to, but we'll probably be passing each other on the 101 up to Santa Barbara, and I won't be back until Monday. Let me know if you're planning anything in the future.

"Lower end bars"? The only one left that comes to mind is the Townhouse on Windward. Damn near everywhere else in the area has received the velvet rope treatment.

I suppose you could hit up the Red Garter, but that place is like the first bus stop for Venice veteranos on their way back from a dime at Pelican Bay. I like my beer cold, and I like it without a shank in the neck, thanks.

Red garter is easily one of the worst bar in LA. I made the mistake going into that sh*thole once and for the 2min I was in there I was afraid of shank to the neck and getting some disease from touching anything in there. I burned the shoes I wore in there when I got home.

Oh man, I conside myself to be an expert on the "lower end bars" of the area We have Del's, off Bundy, The Lost & Found, on National, The Bitter Redhead, on Lincoln, The Joker, on Pico to name a few. Venice has gotten pretty hoity toity as of late, but there are plenty of salty, angry establishments surrounding it.

As for a ride from SM to Redondo, I have no idea about how long it will take. Probably an hour and fifteen or so. I'd recommend getting on the bike trail when you hit Playa Del Rey, which takes you all the way to Redondo, but I guess we'll find out this weekend.

ride to redondo from sm is an easy 15 miles or so. bill's shop is maybe i mile from the redondo pier. it's probably quicker on a bike than in a car most days.

I thought you were talking about the more beachcentric bars. Been everywhere on that list save the Lost & Found. The Bitter Redhead's close to the coast route, but alas, it's only beer and wine.

Not sure how long you've been in the area, but the Joker used to be just as heavy as the Red Garter. Amazing what adding another digit to the median home price over the course of a decade will do to the bar regular demographic.

You can still witness a pretty decent fight at the Daily Pint, though it's more likely over two X5s dueling for pole position parking than somebody getting the short change on a balloon of black tar anymore.

Time was you could be the only person in the bowling alley bar on Pico six nights outta seven. Nowadays you need shears capable of rending designer denim in order to get a drink.

I've been trying to sneek into the shriner bar on 16th and ocean park since I was a kid. The royal order of the moose... Daily pint is still shady but more in a SMC sort of way. Just go to Lacabana for so great tacos and margaritas.

That Moose Lodge is due west by a block as I type this. Flanked as I am by the Masonic Lodge sixty feet to the east, it's like Little Illuminativille around here.

La Cabana is great. Try the tequila bar across the street at Casablanca sometime. Just keep drinking; the smell of mold in there goes away, I swear.

I usually go to the more chichi tequila bar by the bev center, can't rember the name, I think its on third and beverly, with all the pictures of the luchadors on the walls, great bar, crazy tequila. Where are you? 17th and Ocean park? I used to work there at the architecture office between 17th and 18th, by the sports store. Wheres the Masonic lodge? I should know this, I grew up there but I guess I never paid attention.

I'm right across the street from your old office, between the big white chiropractor building and that kid's arts and crafts shop. The Masonic Lodge (Knights of Pythias) is a couple of doors east on your way up to the liquor store.

YEAH that's the place! I have many memories of going to that bar...then nothing... Too many tequilas to choose from... Like Voda by the SM mall, but voda is too fancy and expensive, bunch of yuppies that think they know vodka. The bartenders at voda's great though, they'll chat you up and ignore the yuppies that wants wine if you get them started on different vodkas.

Not to hijack, but more of a heads up... I'd like to do some rides and barhop with LA fixie peeps next time I'm in town... Never had a chance to ride in LA, and none of my friends in LA ride, so it'll be interesting for me to meet some folks.

The Lost and Found is great. It's in a little strip mall off Barrington and National, next to a Blockbuster, and the stucco facade of the building is the nicest thing about it. Super dark inside, they let you smoke, their sound system consists of one of those cheap 3 piece JVC units you had in college, and it's nothing but regulars that seem to have been born there. Last time I was there, it was someones birthday, and they had a nice little buffet and a cake on the pool table. Plus, drinks are pretty cheap. We had two Jack and cokes and a heineken, and it was like 10.50. Plus, the dreariness is it's own charm.

I'm shooting to be back from Santa Barbara round 1:30. Let's all meet up round 2:30 ish, so that we have some time to browse the bike shop?

    Where can everyone meet up?
