I had no idea what I was doing . . . 7,832 bike shops in NYC . . . where to go?? d-i-z-z-y-i-n-g

One of my congregants recommeded visiting a fellow named KC at Larry & Jeff's Bike Shop on 87th & 2nd Avenue. I was treated incredibly well . . . KC literally spent hours with me over numerous visits . . . At most other shops I was either ignored or pressued -- e.g., "this is great," "you're gonna fall in love with this," "oh - THOSE guys' bikes -- they're junk! -- we don't carry them!" KC never pushed anything, one way or the other -- just kept me riding different models and asked lots of questions.

I asked lots of questions right back, mostly stupid, no doubt -- and even messed up the chain on one of the bikes I test rode -- but KC never lost his cool. I ended up buying a Specialized Sirrus, which I definitely would not have even tried had he not sent me out on it -- I absolutely love it.

And the price was great.

Great experience, start to finish. If you're in NYC, call them: 212-722-2201

i've just been forced to try out Chelsea Bicycles NYC (https://www.chelseabicycles.net/), and was happily suprised to have stumbled upon a great little shop.

though Bikeworks is a great shop, they do some god damn sloppy work.

Yep, Chelsea is really cool. The owner, Rafael, brazes his own frames -- and does some pretty damn good work too.

I just opened a new store in Brooklyn (Williamsburg). Let me know if you need anything. It's just a little store and I haven't got a ton of inventory, but we have very fair prices and a pretty quick turnaround.
Also I just opened an account with Fuji, so if you want a good deal on a new Fuji, let me know.
Thanks......B

wow. i'm surprised. he tried to sell me a generic binder bolt for 20 dollars, a KMC chain for 30 and steel nitto drops for an arm and a leg on 3 different visits. there were a few other items he tried to gouge me on, but i can't remember what they were. i try to support LBSs, but when they shamelessly gouge, it doesn't make it easy. i've bought a few locks from them and some random small parts because they're across the street from my studio, but i rue going in there as i almost always end up walking out shaking my head in disbelief.

he also has a velocity/fusion wheelset in the window for some obscene price that looks to be about double what it should be.

ok if we're going to b**** about chelsea bikes, it did take raphael AT LEAST 3 months (i am not exaggerating) to fix one of my frames. there was a crack between the top tube and the head tube lug. he charged me like $225 for the job and that's with the very small discount he gave me for waiting so long. i thought it was a bit much and debated just buying one of his frames instead. i guess that's what you charge when you're the only guy in town that does frame repairs. he did a good job though. and he guaranteed the frame repair and so far so good. even though he couldnt match the paint, what he ended up painting it kinda looks better. i wish he had painted the fork while he was at it. i want to go back there and have him finish the job, but i'm afraid of how long it will take.

Yeah, that's the main gripe about Chelsea bike. Rafael does awesome work. He rewelded a whole frame for me and it looks and rides great. But the price just kept going up from the original quoted and it was difficult getting my bike back. In the end, I got a great bike, but it was a bit more hassel than I prefer.

+ a whole bunch more.

the experience i had with chelsea bikes trying to have a frame painted was abysmal. took FOREVER, yet they kept saying, "next week," or, "come back thursday." and this crap dragged on and on. it just ended up being a total pain in the ass, and i felt dicked around. i don't go there anymore, for anything.

Many moons ago when I lived there I used to see some pretty neat fixes at Conrads in Tudor City. But I doubt it still exists.

I'm right across the street too, in 151 His prices are shall we say.... "aggressive", but I've found that as I keep coming back, he keeps kicking me better deals. The folks there are definitely nice, as well...

King Kog makes trackstar look like a mansion, that shop is tiny. They fill it with some nice stuff though, had some real nice frames on the wall, some clothes and enough champs grips to put every hipster on b-burg on the track. Component wise I don't remember much, they definitely have a few, but its not a steady supply sort of place.

Damn, wish I'd seen this post sooner. I was referred to Chelsea Bikes when I had a bent frame. Opted instead to go to Bicycle Station; Mike did it within the week and charged me 25 bucks. This guy has always come through for me! Haven't seen the shop open for over a week now - I hope it's just because of a vacation or something.
