Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I have to move fast on a new rim

So, I decided that when rebuilding my rear wheel I am going to go with 36 spokes as opposed to 32. This means I am going to need a new rim. The two front runners right now are:

Velocity deep V's or
Sun M14As.

I know that Velocitys are the hip rim of choice these days, but is there anyone out there that prefers the suns?

I have to move fast because I need to order this tomorrow if there is going to be any chance of getting this wheel built by Saturday.

which rim is lighter? I'm sure the lighter of the two is still plenty strong.

The suns are advertised at 421 grams while velocitys are around 520 grams. However, the deep v has a reasonably larger deep section.

Its a tough call.

Bikes: Lots. Mostly steel. Mostly heavy. Mostly geared, and very low, at that.

you've got a new hub to match right?

I dig the Deep-v. I just got me a set for my Johnny.

while youre on the subject of velocity rims...

i was at a reputable LBS over the weekend talking to one of the wrenches and the subject of velocity rims came up. the guy basically said that velocitys are soft rims that dont have welded seams and are prone to breaking. this was the first ive heard anything negative about velocity rims-- everyone here on BF seems to love them.
anyone heard anything similar? is this info correct or is it dated and obsolete info?

I don't think that they are welded, but I don't think that needs to make them weaker. I also hear that velocity always honors claims for broken rims.

Yes, I do have a new hub.

Velocity heat-treats their rims. I don't think many companies do that. Welding the seam would cancel out the heat-treating. I'm less happy that they don't have eyelets than the non-welding.

If you have questions, call Velocity, they're really cool there. I called yesterday morning to order my rims and they came today.

excellent.

They also hand-build all their wheels as well as IRO's wheels. The guy I talked to said he's built like 700 wheels this year or something.

you know, looking back to the conversation, i remember the lack of eyelets being his main complaint to the rim. makes a little more sense why he wouldnt be fond of them.

The best way to move fast on rims is to peddle faster, IMHO.
