First time single speed/fixed gear suggestion

First time single speed/fixed gear suggestion
I finally got a flip-flop hub wheel (2nd hand) and am ready to turn my '72 Bottecchia into a single speed/fixed gear.
this will be the first time for me (okay, well...I rode a Schwinn single speed when I was a kid)
the Nervar Chain ring up front is 40 tooth, and I'm going to go with it to keep the kit low $$ out put.
I am thinking of going with 16 tooth freewheel/15 tooth track cog
does this seem about right?

40-15 might be a little short if you are in a flat area. There's plenty of 14-tooth cogs out there for when you decide your legs need more mashing and less spinning though.

I second that. You should check sheldon browns site for gear inch conversions and if you do some searches on here I am pretty sure you can find what size drivetrain others are running. right now I am running a 42-16, seems pretty decent.
