Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

just a little curiousity.

would you (i've already made my decision, but im wondering about others) prefer a nice road frame, or a subpar track frame? here goes:

i've been riding a busted 80's-ish fuji conversion for waaay too long now. i've had a good years worth of messin' and even rode it (as a fixie) from philly to virginia. personally, i like the feel of a conversion. but i've only ridden one track frame, for 15 minutes. so maybe i like the idea of liking conversions more.

regardless, the used bike market is DEFINATLY leaning towards good deals for a nice conversion.

i had $200 spare bucks last week, needed a new bike, and had a choice between this:

https://thehubbikecoop.org/site/itemd...t=3rdcharacter

and this:

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEDW%3AIT&rd=1

i ended up getting the miyata for $200 even. it'll be at my step in a few days.

mabye when the hip kids start riding road bikes, i can turn this over for the same price a steamroller goes for on ebay now, and get myself a nagasawa/bomber pro/colnago frame. haha.

anyways... nice conversion v.s. irourlyianchipistangster?

Bikes: Lots. Mostly steel. Mostly heavy. Mostly geared, and very low, at that.

I dunno. I think that first link is pretty funny, 'cuz I live in "The Hub Housing Co-operative, and we all ride bikes. We named ourselves "the hub" 'cuz bikes are so central to everyone's lives.

I don't get your question, neither of those bikes are a nice road frame......

I actually want one of each, useable road frame, useable TT frame(700cc front and rear) and a great track frame to race on...

well it was the fact that i could get a decent TT-meant-for-a-derailleur frame+fork+front wheel for the price of what seems to be the bottom of the barrel frame-with-track-ends.

since the used bike market favors road frames right now, and i'm really only interested in fixed gears, did i make the right choice?

would others make the same choice as me, or not?

sorry if this is all utterly pointless, but its been keeping me up at night. (figurativly)

I'm with you, Fruit (also figuratively)

Save $$$ and steer clear of track snobs is what I do. (and no Chicago this weekend, either)

Pake is not bottom of the barrel.
I would say the Pake is definitely nicer than the Windsor, Motobecane, Tsumani and probably even the Langster. Not that that says much.
But it is the same tubing as the Steamroller and over $100 cheaper.
Very solid, inexpensive frame.

Aha, I must be one of those track snobs, since I am interested in fixie for riding/racing on the track...

Since the "derailer bike" is not legal for track racing, not sure about UCI racing..I did not think of it as a road bike/track bike..but rather a "unique toy"

I would rather have a nice road conversion than a crappy track frame.. Then again I really cant afford either. I'll be looking out for you on that bike to say hello, not that I think I could miss it.

i'm using it for messin. so for me anything goes. s'long as it lasts. the miyata was fillet brazed and lugged on the BB, compared to tig welds, which i can never bring myself to trust. the carbon fork is going far far away too.

The 'track snob' comment was said lovingly, by the way.

There's a place for everything, just, some people don't think conversions should exist, is all.
