Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Brisbane meetup Sun 13/11

Myself and two others are meeting at the QUT end of the Goodwill bridge at 7am this Sunday (13/11) for the inaugural BFR (Brisbane Fixed Ride)

Route will follow the river from QUT to UQ, then to Indooroopilly, across the bridge and through Oxley, Graceville, Yerongpilly, Fairfield, and at Dutton Park either around West End on the river or shortcutting back to the Goodwill bridge if we bit off more than we could chew.

Proposed route can be seen below in green, blue is as yet undecided, and it's all subject to change on the day if conditions (weather, hills, hangovers) dictate. Any suggestions are also welcome.

We're geared at 42x16, 42x17 and 39x16, ~65-70". It's a social ride so the pace won't be frantic.

Post, PM, email (ahblake at gmail dot com) or call/sms 0410 345679 if you're keen to join the fun. Keep an eye out for a white Peugeot, green Raleigh or yellow Apollo, or, the only bikes in the area sans gears.

Andrew.

Drop us a line when you're all fixed up and ready to go, I'm keen for another early Sat/Sun ride anytime if I don't have anything else on.

It was a good ride, not too fast (35km, 1:30 riding time, 24km/hr avg) and good to meet up with a few likeminded people who don't stare blankly or look incredulous when you say 'It's fixed. You know, you can't coast, no gears." It's also the most fixed bikes in one spot I've seen in Brisbane bar the velodrome.

The bikes at Tennyson power station, L->R: GB's Apollo II, my Raleigh SuperCourse, rogaine's Peugeot PR10(?)

Anyone that's keen to join the fun is welcome, eschew spandex and plastic bikes, to quote Dizzee Rascal, 'Fix up, look sharp', and blitz cafe racers on the slopes.

Andrew.

Will definitely be keen for the next one boys. My first conversion ain't going to be as pretty as those bikes though. Had to scrounge around to find a frame big enough for me (weren't there any 6'3 riders in the 70's?), and ended up with a rusted peugeot that needed to be completely stripped. the hand painted job isn't coming along as well as I would have liked. but it should still be alright.
