A new Shimano E-type coaster hub can be purchased for under $25. Your LBS can order it for you if they don't have any in stock. That and some others which are essentially the same hub are pretty much the only new ones currently available in the US.
A variety of older coaster hubs can be found on Ebay, at swap meets, etc.

New Shimano units were sold by one guy at least up until recently for about $10-$15 shipped, depending on the starting price and number of bidders. These were 36 hole units with 18t sprocket.

I have the nyc coaster on a frame with track forks. I was a little worried about buying from them (seems some people have had problems), I had not problems, the wheel showed up at my door in good shape. It is a lot of fun to do hockey stops etc. I actually just finished the chicago meet and great alley cat on it and it was fine.
2 things to know, it is heavy and the metal strap which come with it to attach it to the frame is a weak link and may fail. I broke mine and replaced it with a stronger strip of steel i had lying around.

These are aluminum in pretty colors. Unfortunately, the only ones I've ever come across were plain steel/rubber. Local hardware store sells them for about $.75 apiece. The rubber is nice to reduce scratching the paint.

I think that is very close to what I had. The point where the bolt goes into it ripped. May have to do with my size, about 200lbs (pretty dense). Anyway, even when it does fail you would probably be able to ride, at least to some place where you could fix it. When it fails the arm that extends from the hub will usually just swing around a little till it hits the frame and then it will stop as normal.

hey, thanks...i actually haven't ridden a bike with coaster brakes in years and i'm getting giddy thinking about this...
as far as the wheels, i want to leave the fenders on the bike, and it's got 27" wheels...700c'll rub. that'd be easier than a new hub, but also...from threads on here, i'm a little leery of nycbikes. it seems like someone has good experiences from time to time but that most don't.

My favorite thing is that 29" wheels (aka 700c) are smaller than 27" wheels. Isn't life great?
