Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

so i just watched breaking away.

first of all, WHOA.

the only bike movie ive seen before was quicksilver, and thats just a two hour long joke, with a punchline that sucks.

this **** was totally epic.

second of all, what kind of track bike was homeboy riding that had a one piece crank?!?

Great movie. The bikes are AMF "Roadmasters". They are not fixed but SS.

Refund? REFUND!?

-one of my favorites

the only part of breaking away that makes me sad is when he's drafting the semi and all of a sudden he's in the little ring for a brief shot.

now you've gotta rent American Flyer and Rad Racing and you've seen them all (unless I am leaving other classic biking movies out).

I guess frame pumps can come in handy after all...

That one was just called "Rad!" (which it most certainly was) - Rad Racing was the name of the team.

The other day at the bike shop, the song that's playing when they are doing tricks at the school dance came on the radio - we all rejoiced. Rad! is definitely a must-see.

breaking away is great... little 500 is ****ing crazy down here every year. the race is weird though. they ride coaster brakes on a flat cinder track. you're allowed to mod the bike however you want though outside of the frame. i'm pretty sure the fiji team rode a fixed in the race last year.

i was wondering how the dudes who had never ridden fixies could just POOF! and skid on command for the trade-offs.

yeah.. their trade offs are basically just skidding with one foot using the coaster brake on the loose track as the other guy on the right picks it up to take off. its pretty crazy to watch how fast they get them down and someone always eats hard **** in the process.

its weird to see how big cycling here is, but in the way that it pretty much only revolves around little 5 - not a whole lot of road racing, no one i know of racing track besides some of the kids just hitting indianapolis for fun.

Dude, 2 Seconds ... which is an awesome movie, yes. I watched that on the french channel (no subs) awhile back. Didn't understand most of the dialogue but it still sucked me in for two hours.

Don't bother. It's one of the worst movies ever made. A total let down compared to Breaking Away.

Having seen breaking away in the theater when it first came out, I was psyched to rent it on NetFlix and introduce it to my 14 year old son. Even more psyched when he asked me the other day if we could rent it again............

Triplets of Belleville isn't really a bike film, IMO. There were a whole lotta bikes in the beginning, but the middle and end of the film were very much bikeless.

c'mon folks... this was a great flick. Some of the images (bike related) were priceless.

The guy's huge calves
her chasing him in training on her tricycle
her truing his wheels after the ride, pinging the spokes like a harp

the whole concept of some brutal gambling game based on a mechanized cycle race
