Are Campy Record hubs delicate?

I'm trying to chose a front hub for my new wheel build. I'm sure Campy record hubs spin real nice, but I'm also concerned about durability. I take care of my stuff, but I ride hard on rough pavement, hop curbs and so forth, and I weigh 190. Part of the joy of wheel building is the simple act of building, but part of it is the opportunity to select each individual part. I could use Campy Record up front, and I'm sure it would be nice, but if something else might be more durable... I don't know so I am asking. Is campy Record stuff delicate? Is there something else you all recommend that's bomb proof? It doesn't need to be a track hub. in fact QR may even be preferable since it makes it easier to toss it into a back seat if the need arises.

I would trust the record hubs a lot more than the c-record sheriff star hubs. Although for street duty I would probably build something a bit less expensive and a bit more sealed...

Of course I was riding Superbe Pro NJS hubs on the street for a year, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

People ride c records and have no issues with them.

The one thing to keep in mind is that campy does not warrant their track stuff for road use. Phil Wood on the other side warrants their track hubs even for off-road use.

I've always been nervous of campy record on a street bike just cause of this:

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/record-track.html

Its a one off I'm sure.

That said I would trust a phil, goldtec, any quality mtb hub or similar, as I've definitely beaten the crud out of those and they hold up nice. I think anything with solid flanges thats relatively new would do the job.

That said, this being bike forums, I'm sure someone does fixie cross with campy records and has no problem.

i might not have read through the post entirely, but are you talking high flange or low flange? not that i can pretend like i know any difference in relation to physics, weight distribution, etc.

campy record, even old old stuff, its pretty much the standard. didn't ceya say like he has been rocking the same record hubs for something like a decade in hard NY streets? so long as you maintain them, they will last you a long, long time. repack and overhaul once or twice a year and they will love you back. 3 cross those spokes.

I don't think high flange Campy hubs are delicate, especially if you're looking for a front only, though they may not be the *most* durable hub you can buy. If you're not dead set on a track hub, you can get a NOS or lighly used road hub with the same quality ride for a fraction of the price of what you'd pay for a high flange track hub. Me personally, the next wheel set I'd like to build up would be with a set of Royce hubs. They make track stuff, cross, road etc and from everything I've heard they are well engineered for the real world, but still fast. Maybe something you'd be interested in too.

are you talking about track hubs or road hubs? I've been using both high and low flange super record road hubs and have had no issues. you'll need to repack bearings with new grease every half year or so, otherwise they are really good.

Why would I shoot a guy... BANG! then bloody drive him to the hospital. It defeats the purpose of having shot him in the first place... and its bloody insulting!

I'm talking road hubs. less expensive, and QR is actually a good thing for street usage provided theft is not a huge issue. I'd like High flange purely for style reasons, but in the end I'll settle for the most functional/affordable/durable compromise. Just trying to build a good wheel that will roll smooth for a good many miles.

has anyone ever had a problem with a FRONT hub? all of mine on mtb's run for years off road without any problems. front road hubs don't even get nearly that abuse...

if it's light, cheap, or looks snazzy, i say go for it.

I've got a c record sheriff star front hub that is laced to a mavic module E rim which dates it to late 70's early 80's. Still smooth. Still rolling without any problems.

Sorry to inform you that CRecords came out in 1986 and YES I still have mine that I messengered on for 14yrs and they are still riding!

It is all how your wheels are built. All of my Campy wheelsets survived except 1 which hub I still have. All of the 6 sets I personally bought still riding on and smooth.
