Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Hipster Trolls Sub-Forum?

Since there seem to an overabundance of hipster related threads here lately (seemingly mostly started by people who've only been around here for a pretty short time ) I think something needs to be done. Too many off-topic, no meaning or substance threads and posts bring the moderators down on us big time. Those who have been here awhile know this. Screaming 'Oh no, they locked my thread!!!' isn't going to change the nature of this board.

So what I'm thinking is that we could make a sub-forum like the track forum used to be. All the hipsters can play with eachother in there, get fasion tips for their fixies, call eachother poseurs, whatever.

And the rest of us wouldn't have to search through all these threads on the top page. In fact, we could just ignore the whole thing

Who's with me here? Please discuss (rationally)...

Oh, and to keep it relevant to fixed gear bikes, I think I might have just found a line on a $25 Fuji Royale touring bike to build up as my winter bike. Still waiting to hear back from the guy. I know it's a little late in the year to start building one, but I thrashed my Falcon pretty good last winter, and I don't really think that riding it is the best idea right now. But currently, it's my only option...

a sub-forum for bag threads, alleycats, *hearting* people, messenger pay questions, hipster hating... could be nice. is it necessary? probably not.

The blog of a guy I know that lives a few blocks from me. It doesn't have a seat(post) or bars, but I think I have those. The bearings are shot. I think that he got it at a garage sale. He's clearing out a bunch of bike stuff for free. I helped set him up with his first fixie, which he got from my brother for a laptop and a few hundred dollars. The wheels were worth about as much as the laptop... And my brother was clearing out the bike stuff at that point...

you know, i think those threads are fun up to a point. my two favorite things about this forum are that even if someone's thread doesn't deal with a problem i have, i can learn more about this crazy, wonderful bicycle machine form that thread. the other is that there's a real sense of humor among people here. the two in a good mixture are great...but the past couple days...i can't say i'm annoyed by the threads that are up, in fact, i post in half of them, which means i prolong them, but i DO definitely miss learning more about bikes on here. i like having both...but lately i guess it hasn't been both, has it?

i'm confused, where's my beer?

When I got back heavy into cycling, I started on familiar turf (bmx, mtb). But, since I moved to a busy downtown area and started commuting, I serendipitously came upon the practicality of a singlespeed, lugged steel road bike. I evolved into fixed gears due to my longtime appreciation of Dick Lane Velodrome( I used to teach near it, and we used to take the kids to the track as part of a non-profit program). Now, I'm a Cat 5 track racer in winter training, looking at March for the season opener. Along the way, I have been asked to messenger, since I am right in the middle of the action, and I bike every day. Well, I'd rather focus on getting my media group up and running, and the courier business is slow enough to be nonexistent.
Somewhere along the way, I picked up on a silly subculture of labeling.
I mock it as often as possible, firmly aware of any irony or contradiction that it presents.
Because humor does not always belong in foo, especially the dry variety that people here seem to get.
So I posted my 'Collary Axiom' partly to mock the whole labeling thing, and partly because it's true.

Serendipper, I'm not seeing the word "evole" in my dictionary. -But it is a pocket dictionary, and a Marriam Webster at that...is this another hipster spelling my good man?

Aren't voles a type of rodent? Maybe he left out a hyphen and it's supposed to mean an internet rat...

Although in context it makes more sense that he left out a v...

I go to the kitchen to get my food, come back to edit my post, and voila! A bored Troll in winter.
Which could be the title of all of your collected posts, should you ever decide to do so.

Good idea! A voluminous collection of my posts...-of course you would have also to include the threads, to put it in to some perspective, and that way there would a whole cast of characters. You can be my editor perhaps? -You know, weed out the weak posts and correct for silly typos? My man, we're onto to something.

I find that you get smarter when he has more to drink. Atleast that is my experience with him on rides and in my apartment.

I think that this forum should just have a FAQ sticky thread that is locked at the top. One that can answer all of the common questions....

such as....

nevermind. i am going to be good now.

At another forum that I haunt, they started a new rider thread so everyone wouldn't throw up after the same questions/comments were posted for the billionth time- much of this hipsterish stuff seems to be rather new rider related.

Um, maybe you meant 'I find that you get smarter when you have more to drink'? There is a cutoff point, but still, I've heard that from a lot of sources. No wonder I work best hung over/slightly drunk...

As far as the sticky, it was discussed awhile ago, but nothing ever really happened (a similar situation of multliple closed threads, a freind resigning his moderator status.) And really, there are already what, 5 stickies up top? I think that trying to figure out how to format it and what should be there, and what comments are allowed is a lot more than the mods here should have to deal with.

Someone with good search skills should bring up the thread and post a link...
