Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? They're one of my favorite bands ever.

I just need the Polar Grinder comp 12" and the collaboration with Merzbow for a complete discography.

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Quite frankly, this album is lackluster. And with the news that they ripped off fans by holding back tracks from the (shoddy quality) download is just icing on the cake. I will not be purchasing this album.

Can you rip off fans by providing a download for free? Probably not. I even sent them like, $2.00 to download the thing and I'm not bummed at all. And chances are, I'll probably fork over the chunk of cash to get the LP box set. More songs, analog sound, art-work, etc...

Also, listening to people ***** about music not being made available to them at 320kbps or in flac format really grates on my nerves. Shut the hell up already.

Hm, I apologize for enjoying high quality music. I wouldn't have complained had it been, say, 192. But 160 is ridiculous.

Also, holding back tracks from the sliding scale priced, downloadable album while pretending, "Oh, we're Radiohead, we're revolutionizing music," is irritating to me. It was all a ploy. In fact, their manager admitted it:

"If we didn’t believe that when people hear the music they will want to buy the CD, then we wouldn’t do what we are doing."

Seriously? You're going to complain that the files aren't high enough quality when you virtually don't have to pay for it? Beggars can't be choosers. If you really care that much about the quality to ***** over a 30 kbps difference then you probably would want the box set anyways.

That and your claim to the whole thing being a ploy sounds ridiculous. Why shouldn't they save a few tracks for the fans who are willing to drop the extra money on the box set? It isn't like this is the first time that bands have sold tracks that aren't on the normal album version. Get over it.

Also, that quote sounds like it was taken way out of context.

This isn't really the place for this argument, but I'll say what I have to say anyways.

First off, I think this is a genius way to distribute music, and I think that all bands and labels should hop on it. It's the future. I have to give credit where credit is due. Radiohead wasn't the first band to do this, but they were certainly the largest yet, and so I'm glad that this style of distribution is being seen now.

Second, I don't want to be viewed as a gimmie gimmie gimmie consumer here. I do think Radiohead's idea is cool, but I have a few qualms with the way they did it. And since I wasn't very eloquent before, I'll state them here:

1.) They released it at low quality, or, at least, moderately low quality. Perhaps this is just a personal issue (and I knew what I was getting when I got the album), but I would like this kind of release to be at least decently high quality. Advances in VBR file compression allows fairly high bite rates with decent file size. Just something to think about in the future.

2.) They never stated that there were missing tracks in the digital download. The point here is not that you didn't have to pay for, the point is that you COULD pay for it, and many people did. What they paid for was an incomplete version of the album, and they didn't know that they were getting the incomplete version. I don't think this is fair to fans. I know many people that paid for the digital download, anywhere from 5 dollars to 15 dollars. Are they expected to go out and buy the CD version, giving more money just to hear a few tracks that were missing from their already paid for version of the album?

I guess that's what I have to say. To me, that seems misleading. And perhaps it was inadvertently misleading, but the point still holds true: People who bought the album shouldn't have to buy another copy to hear the missing tracks.
