Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Chicagoans - Maxwell Street Market?

Anyone gone to this?
I've heard that there are bikes there to be bought?

I kept hearing this, too: that this was the place to find your recently stolen bike. I've only been there once, but I didn't see anything beyond a pile of rear wheels.

Really they sell stolen bikes there?

(and not just the bicycles of cyclists killed by people parking in roosevelt road bike lane to go to the maxwell market?)

Sorry, I ride by that clusterfeck every week. The cars suck, but the produce is great.

I go for the food , cheap bandanas, and the Mexican wrestling masks. I did find a nice, complete, Japanese track bike there two years back, but couldn't find a way to easily transport it back to MKE. Plus, there is that stolen bike probability to contend with.

I have been pretty regularly for the past few months and haven't seen anything that can't be had at working bikes. The guys working their tables can be kinda fickle on pricing as well. One week it might be like 10 bucks and the next 50. Some of them are really set on their price, but most will be able to be haggled down if you are persistant. On the other hand I dont know of anywhere else that you can get three packages of socks for ten dollars any more readily.

I furnished my first apartment entirely from Maxwell Street.
Ghetto fabulousness. I've seen a few nice bikes there every once in
a while, but just can't justify buying someone's stolen bike.
