Segway spotting on SF ride

Some of us were here for this rare sighting a few weeks back, you gotta have Flash 8 to view, and sound up if possible (it makes it funnier):

I contracted at google for little while and people would regularly ride these thing to the cafeteria that was 50 feet away. And those were people that already sat for a living!

the vest are the things that are killing me. i would love to ride up alongside them and hit an airhorn. cruel, but the laughter ensuing might be funny.

As I was riding around and killing some time before the Santa Monica Critical Mass, I saw a guy riding a segway on the bike paths in Venice Beach. . . . . I shouted out, "Get a BIKE!" I really don't see the logic to those things.

They do the exact thing here in Austin. The look great in their vest and helmet. I would think if you were about to fall you could just run beside it until you slow down. I will never know though. I won't be riding one.

Good thing segways never caught on. Can you imagine how many more fat people we'd have if segways were cheap. How lazy can people get if they can't even WALK? People on segways are just asking for the ridicule. Not to be mean, but sometimes its just too hard not to say something to a person on a segway. Good lord I've never typed segway so many time in my life, hopefully this will be it for the rest of it.

Actually, I believe there's some reason to think that people might walk more if Segways caught on. Sure, in the most basic sense, they are an alternative to walking. On the other hand, they tend to encourage more non-automobile trips. Getting people out of their cars is the first step to getting them into a more active lifestyle.

People might ride their Segway to a pedestrian-friendly destination and proceed to walk around rather than drive to a strip mall in the suburbs. The guy who drives 6 blocks to the video store might get accustomed to not driving so much but might decide that a 6 block Segway to the video store is sort of silly and walk it instead.

Or not.

I can't help but taunt them when they are on the Bike paths. I have ridden one, they're fun for about 8 seconds, roll around, marvel at the engineering, etc. then 8 seconds has gone by.

Ditch your fixies and grab your Segway everyone...It's polo time!

there's a professor who lives down the street from me who commutes to whatever class he teaches on his segway. it's pretty awesome, especially when I drop him in full kit!

Just kidding. Sometimes I want to catch a tow, though.

Yeah the majestic part is that they were only going about 5 mph, and standing still-- it looked so boring and awkward!
