This past weekend I rode with a friend who was sporting an abundantly geared road bike. It was not a race by any means, but it was interesting to see him drop like a brick when terrain got a little steep. The only time I had a problem keeping up with him was on a slight downhill over 22 mph ... but not a real difference.
He was riding on a Felt (lighter than my Schwinn) with 23 mm tires, and I was riding my monstrosity Scwhinn conversion with 32 mm tires. Rolling resistance was on his side, weight was on his side, and even fitness level was on his side ... yet I observed that his percieved effort increase was substantially greater than mine on the said uphill sections of the ride.
1) Other than the PDF on "Holomonic ... " in the FGG, does anyone has access to an actual study of the advantages of FG over multigear in a controled environment?
2) ... or is it impossible to measure by the common layman, and I have just to enjoy the ride and stop asking stupid questions?
3) Would be possible to do a team ride riding fixed and hanging with my geared friends, so they can draft me on the uphills and downhils, whilst I would be drafting them on the flats? Agreed that I have to train a lot to be at their level, or would it be a useless endeavor?
