Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

NYC Transit Stike Bike Ride.

see: http://www.bikeblog.blogspot.com/

"Meet at the George Washington Statue at the park between South 5th and Roebling, right at the entrance to the Williamsburg bridge...Brooklyn side. This is where CM Brooklyn often has one of their meeting spots. The bike ramp to the Willamsburg Bridge is closed at this spot for who knows what (could be to complete the de-bumping project) So the new entrance to the bridge is under the bridge on Bedford between South 5th and Broadway.

We'll meet at the park and then head over.

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

7:45-8:00am Leave close to 8:00am."

I am posting this here, just cause I like you people.

I'm sorry, there is more info on the link.

"The route will be...across Williamsburg Bridge
across Delancey st. which turns into Kenmare St.
Right on Lafayette St.
Left on Prince St.
Right on 6th Ave.
Left on 59th St.
Right on Central Park West
Right on 110th
and from here...people can decide.

I think if people want to meet at other points in Brooklyn like the Manhattan Bridge or Brooklyn Bridge then try and link up to the route, say on Delancey, coming off of the Bowery.

I know we can't please everyone. The idea is people jump on and off where they need to get.
heck, I'm riding and don't even have to be at work.

Dress warm, bring coffee, green tea, ban-cha tea, grain coffee, redbull, rockstar or whatever gives you that buzz.
Just like a carpool we'll see familiar faces, talk about the job, who's cheating on who, how mean the boss is, we'll be nice to Naomi, talk stock tips or global warming is not a myth...ufo sightings...etc.

see you on the ride."

nah, it was ok. lotsa idiots who've got not a clue as to how to ride a bike, but that was to be expected. worse were the moron pedestrians who've never been on the bridge, and can't hold a line when walking.

the rest of my commute was much more fun than usual... far fewer cars, and open roads. and tons of bikes! very interesting stuff.

definitely saw a few troupers who thought they could do it.. but ended up walking their bikes along the west side highway. also saw a cute 7-yr old and his mommy riding together -- so cute!

4-wheel traffic was completely immobile at 96th street, where every car was being checked for HOV-worthiness. to them i say, HA!

bike lanes a mile wide, peds lining up to share cars to cross bridges, folks forgetting maanic holiday shopping and concentrating on the basics of day-to-day living.

NYC has become an enlightened socialist (and bike-friendly) society!!!!

god bless the mta.

Encountered a few wobbly cyclists, a couple slow and steady cyclists and some fast moving, but clueless in traffic cyclists. Saw a few extra cyclists at my office building wondering how to bring their bikes into the building with them (they can't), then looking for places to lock up (not many). Interesting day.

I love watching two baby thugs piggy back on BMX's- it's just so cute.
Hard to tell if it's one or two of them riding- It must be those XXL jacket liners.

The ride was so awesome this morning. NOOO traffic and so fast. The Red Cross was set up across the Williamsburg bridge with coffee to help us all through the "tragedy". HAHAHAHA I love the transit strike keep it going forever

There were 5 or so riders on the morning meet up.

I am trying to organize an evening ride. So far, I think it will start at Columbus Cirlce at 6pm and then head south to the 3 bridges to Brooklyn. If I get my ass in gear, I might get the sound bike out.

I was photographed no less than 3 times today on my ride over the Manhattan Bridge and up Sixth Avenue. I presume they were journalists, but they may have been Transportation Alternatives folks, since they had bikes nearby. The TA guys must be having a cream dream today.

The ride was actually a blast. We commandeered lanes of every street we rode on, and there wasn't much traffic to deal with.

I am still engaged in full-blown unholy jihad with my building about bike storage. When I got here, there was not a single bike rack, as promised. My bike is currently locked to itself and not to anything secure. I spoke to the building manager's secretary or assistant, who told me "they are coming sometime today". I was also basically told tough luck when I tried to explain how I don't leave the building before 6:00, which is when they say they are closing the loading dock. This is all after the management sent an email to all tenants saying that there would be bike racks, etc. All in all, a bunch of bullshnozz.

Either way it was a fun ride.

I rode my sister in from Park Slope this morning. The ride was slower than usual (to accommodate her), but freakin' awesome nonetheless.

I'm also volunteering to organize group rides from Brooklyn for my company. Keep us posted on your evening rides, BAB. It'll come in handy for a lot of people.

-Today was a fun ride in. bikes were everywhere. so were cars. and people on foot. crazy.
the saddest thing was watching people walk their bikes up the bridge.

brooklyn traffic was sick, but parts of manhattan were quiet like an early sunday morning.

Oh, and does anyone know anything about the Valet Bike Parking in Bryant Park? I suppose I could just look out the window & check it out, but why do that when I can ask the internet...
