Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Roadmaster SS

I know this isn't the best way to go SS but if i remove the shifter cable and set the high-limit screw on the derailleur to the gear i want to use all the time I should have a rock-solid ride right??

thanks for your time...
Nick

That's pretty slick, but I couldn't do it. I could not feel OK about selling those junk parts for money even if people ARE meshugga enough to buy them. Besides, there are plenty of decent frames out there for free, no need to flip the junk parts on ebay to get a new junk frame for free. I could have built a nice single speed from any of the free bikes I picked up last summer for the price of a freewheel, and some chainring bolts.

You'll want to set the high AND low limit screws to hold the derailer in position... But keep in mind that you won't experience any of the benefits of SS riding. you won't have any of the benefits of a transmission either...

That walmart bike is very kool. It's like making art from trash. did you redish the rear wheel or just roll with it?

Since I used a bmx crankset I already had a perfect chainline and didn't need to redish.

Just imagine if walmart would make a stock vehicle like that instead of using the suspension forks. People might actually have to give their bikes good reviews. Wow, imagine they came with cheap plastic fenders setup like your bike for 100 bucks.

Yeah its a nice thought.
