Converting my Univega into a SS/FG. Need advice please!
So I have a Univega Nuovo Sport that I am currently converting into a FG/SS. I bought this wheel set on ebay yesterday:
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7210282472
It comes with the flip flop hub and locking ring, but no cogs. Could someone point me in the right direction for what kind of cogs i should get for this set up? and maybe an online store to order them. Im a noob to the max so any help is apprectiated. Thanks a lot.

You want a durace, EAI or surly cog.
Harris cyclery sells them.

You may also want to get a high quality lockring, eg. the durace one for $8 on harris' site, as likely the one that comes with your wheels is low-quality.

you'll also want rim tape, unless you're a fan of flats.
edit - a couple of wraps of electrical tape will do the same job.
double edit - i'm an idiot and the auction says it includes rim strips. i was too distracted by the photos and the flashy colors.

Awesome, thanks guys. Is there a certain size cog you all would recommend? and are fixed gear and single speed cogs the same? just one for each side?
edit: nevermind, i found the freewheel cogs. should the AC racing freewheel work okay?

Scroll down. There's a section on gearing. Let's see some photos when you're all done. I just finished my Univega conversion and look forward to seeing your creation.

If you are using a freewheel cog you don't need a lockring.
Lockrings are only if you decide to go fixed gear.
The AC freewheels are pretty good. I will say that they are on the loud side

Rotafix Method Forget the part about not needing a lockring, though; you do.
Just as a caveat, you might want to go to an LBS or have a friend who's experienced with all this noise help you put your cog and lockring on. If you don't, make sure you tighten everything more than you think you need to (you're going to need a real lockring tool, so you're going to the LBS anyway).
After your first ride, the cog'll be a lot tighter, so tighten down that lockring again. All the way.

I'm confused-ed is this a freewheel-in singlespeed or a fixed gear? 'cause I could've sworn you were just putting a freewheel on

edit: the "forget about not needing a lockring" comment is regarding the Chaingang Rotafixa's claim that the method " enables the secure assembly of a track sprocket without having to use the traditional lock ring too." As far as I'm aware, the jury's still out on this one, so better to err on the side of safety, eh?

If they're the onces that come on the Mercier/Motobecane/Windsors, as the auction states, they're as cheap as they come. I'm pretty sure the hubs are unmarked. That said, I know of one pair that's been ridden pretty hard for at least six months and has had no problems.

Unless you live in Mewton Mass, better run down to your local bike shops and get friendly with the crew and let them know what you are doing. Harris is a good source for info and if you must mail order stuff. But they will not rescue you when you are screwing things up and your LBS would. We would too, but then you"ll have to wait a few days to sort out the info to noise and find out that you don't have the right tools.
