Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Looking for job and thinking about courier postions.

I am currently looking for a job, and because I already commute everywhere on my bike and live car free, I thought that I might look into being a bicycle courier. However... I live in a fairly small town with only four courier companies around, so i'm not sure what that means. I am planning to call all four later today and ask them if they even use bicycle couriers.

You guys think being a courier in a small town is a bad idea? Would the money probably suck?

Oh... and does this make me a poseur?

Heh.

i think it might be a cool gig for a little while, but from what i've heard it's not great money or time or anything. others can surely elaborate more, but the impression i've always gotten is that the only upside (which some feel is the only one needed) is getting to ride your bike all over all day.

Ususally courier companies in more sprawled-out cities use cars. You'll only get bike messengers where bikes go faster than cars--NYC, Philly, SF, etc.

That is what I am thinking also. I still think I should call up though... right? No harm I guess.

I'm a college kid right now, so a lot of money isn't my main concern, but some I do need. I'm tired of woring at Publix also, and really want to do something I enjoy.

Maybe some law firms would hire me as a runner? Hmmm...

maybe not as much fun, but try food companies that do a lot of delivery to addresses on the FSU campus. I'd think sandwich and sushi places would be best as you could just throw the food in your bag, unlike at, say, a pizza place.

Check out blueprinting and printing services. They provide an easy-to-carry service that can't really be carried out through fax or email. They print specification books, large format drawings and the like. My town has only ~80,000 people and has 2 companies that do this specifically. There aren't any messengers here, but there might be where you live...

Y'know... that is a really good idea. Thanks for that . I'm going to check out some local Deli-type shops that deliver.

And $0.00/gal: I can't be anymore poor than I am right now heh. Better than nothing.

Words out of my mouth. I'm about to wrangle down one of these gigs. Interview tomorrow morning. Gosh, Kell, you just want to live my life, don't you?

for a moment, I thought you'd set up an alias BF account and had created this thread before I talked to you about this.
