Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

SF Cyclist Killed In Hit And Run

POSTED: 4:28 pm PST January 12, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO -- Police were looking for witnesses in a hit-and-run crash that took the life of a San Francisco bicyclist Thursday.

Sarah Tucker, 26, of San Francisco, was heading down Polk Street at about 2 a.m., according to Inspector Pat Tobin with the department's hit-and-run detail, when she came to a green light at the intersection of Geary Street.

A motorist driving a black Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle west on Geary apparently ran the red light, entering the intersection just before Tucker, who crashed into his passenger door.

"She sees him coming, she yells 'Hey,' that's what made some of the witnesses look up," Tobin said today. Tucker apparently did not have enough time to stop before slamming into the door of the Honda.

Tucker was catapulted off her bicycle, according to the Police Department, and landed in the street. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where she died at 9:46 a.m.

The driver of the Honda is described as a black male, according to police. He apparently did not have any passengers with him. Damage to the door will be obvious, Tobin said.

"All the witnesses said the passenger door had marked damage -- very noticeable," Tobin said. "All the witnesses got good looks at his face."

Any witnesses to the event itself or those who have spotted a black Honda CR-V with damage to the front passenger door are encouraged to call Tobin in the hit-and-run division at (415) 553-1641, or call the department's confidential tip line at (415) 575-4444.

hope that **** burns in hell. i mean, i don't want him executed, though i will fantasize about him being put on a stationary bike and being hit with an suv. or put on a brakeless fixie and pushed downhill into rush hour traffic.

Sorry to hear about this.
Keep your eyes and ears open out there folks.
If you need one to ride safe, run a brake.
My condolences to all involved.

it seems the issue is not about someone not running a brake but about some ****er running a red light, useing there dumbass so called peripheral vision to scope the oncoming and not registering any cars, so blasting the red. they don't see cyclists because they don't know any cyclists...what they don't know can't hurt them in their minds...ignorant mother****ers!!

Not saying it is or isn't the issue. There are no details in the article about the bike, but it does say she didn't have time to stop. A lot of people here ARE overly anxious to go brakeless though. There are a lot of new people here and the "run a brake when learning" is something pertinent to the forum as a whole. Regardless I'm not pursuing the issue in a thread like this.
Again my condolences to all those affected.

I have a feeling they'll find this guy. Vehicular homicide is a bigger deal than the usual bike-car interactions.

There's a special low rent dungheap in hell for people like this. Until then, hopefully someone will turn him in or spot the car and he'll go down for the long count. My condolences to the Sarah's friends and family.

That's just a damned shame. I cannot conceive of not stopping if I ran someone over with a car, and driving off without trying to offer assistance is also beyond belief.

God is good, that is my belief, and that belief comforts me when I read about things like this. The concept that there is more than this. Hopefully Sarah is doing trackstands in heaven.

wow. You've posted some really disturbing, heartless things on this forum, but this just might top them all. I hope her family and those that loved and cared about her never happen across this thread.

it's hardly heartless - it's the fact of the matter. the ultimate tragedy of this situation is that she is, indeed, dead in a morgue right now. that's what happens when an SUV collides with someone on a bicycle. that very fact is why people are upset and why the person who hit her should be punished. she is ****ing dead. i don't have time for supernatural **** that people use in an attempt to ameliorate the situation and to make them feel better about something that is genuinely tragic and the end of a life. she isn't in a better place or doing trackstands in heaven. she'll never do anything again. that is really terrible.

i am a very forward and no-bull**** type of person and i ****ing hate it when people skirt around the facts and try to abstract themselves from the reality of ****ty ****ing situations. this is one of them.

how am i not being respectful? because i mentioned the facts of the matter in a way too forwardly for people to handle? i guarantee that i am as angered and compassionate about this situation as anyone else here. everyone here knows that what i said is true, i don't know why people feel that it is disrespectful to come out and say it. instead, they prefer to hide behind nebulous language and christian platitudes.

There's a difference between hiding behind nebulous language and having tact. You have demonstrated a complete inability to exercise the latter.

This isn't a debate about God but a thread about something that happened to one of us, a cyclist and a human being. But I am a christian and, just like you, I won't stop being who I am. The difference is that I don't crap on your beliefs.

Grow up. Actually, I share your outrage and hurt feelings. But I am comforted by my belief that there is more than this.

I don't think you actually mean any harm and I think your heart is in the right place.

this thread is about finding the ****er who ran from the scene of this tragic accident. i will admit that my argument with kurremkarm's supernaturalism is probably best left elsewhere, but i refuse to apologize for a frank discussion of the physical reality of the situation. the reason we all feel bad is because she is actually dead. if you have any doubts as to whether or not i actually care, take it up with me.
