I've toured the Trek factory + "advanced concept group" a few years back as a lowly production assistant for an OLN segment for the Tour De France.

I envy the dudes in the design area. The factory workers...not so much. Got to see 'em bonding carbon frame pieces together, tig welding, these crazy machines that build and true wheels...cool stuff.

I've got a friend with a madone, and he just screwed up the derailer mount and sent it back in for service. only $25 to replace the dropout! Apparently the dropouts are actually glued in with hot melt glue - so they can be removed and replaced with nothing but a heat gun (I'd bet that they use a jig to get them straight).

I play hockey too, and this is the way all modern hockey sticks are made - you have a carbon shaft, and a composite blade which is glued into the shaft. you can change the blade easily with a heat gun.

So anyone want to trust me and take a heat gun to their $3000 frame to install some track dropouts?

This is a little off topic, but that's not exactly true. The one that all the pros like to use (at least before the strike, I've been a little hockey deprived this season--just haven't had the time) is the Easton Synergy. Maybe they've all moved on to the Stealth now. Anyhow, those sticks are one-piecers. Several other companies also have one-piece offerings, Bauer, CCM, Nike, Louisville, and a few lesser known players.

One-piece construction allows for better energy transfer to the blade as the stick as a whole is stiffer with less play where the blade joins the shaft.

Just sayin.

two piece construction of hockey sticks has been prevalent in the ameteur market for a long time. most mass produced sticks remain two piece. the pro's use much different (and more expensive) sticks than the rest of us.

i remember taking a slapshot in high school and having the blade fly off
