bmx -> fixed -> bmx
 

I'm guessing a lot of us used to ride bmx. dirt or street, whatever. anyone stop riding bmx entirely or do you do both now? I stopped riding bmx for a few years then went to a local trail when I was 19 to try it again and broke 2 ribs on the first jump. I've pretty much been on a road or track bike for the last 7 years.

Then last week I found this TV channel that showed a ton of street riding and suddenly I really missed doing that stuff. The next day some kid did a 180 off a curb next to me. That night in a dream I was doing all kinds of flatland tricks on my track bike!

Tomorrow I'm pulling my 80s diamondback out of my grandparent's shed to take back to the city with me.

Do any of you fixed riders miss bmx? Still do it? How old are you? I feel like I'm cheating on my track bike.

i owned a bmx bike, but never really got into it. i actually skated a lot, which seems like something else a lot of us here have been into.

briefly......I do both at 23, but a career job kinda prevents me from working myself like I used too or from the road trips that are so very much a part of the sport. Also after 9 years of it falling hurts alot longer when I do go down, but I still really love it. It has become more about flow for me, carving around and getting out of the ramp, which is alot of why I ride a track bike. the flow of riding through the city. Anyway, yeah. I heart my 20", why exactly i dont know but I stil really love it, riding is just harder now as I get older (in the sense of time passing) becausse 23 is not old. It is harder to make the time for it, where as riding my fixed is my commute. there is no reason necessary. I guess what sums it up is that I ride my track bike everyday for a good period of time, but I also have a ramp build in the vacant lot next door

Skated my whole life. Sadly, my left hip has become a serious problem and I cannot skate anymore. Ironically I still can ride fixed etc as long as I don't fall on that side. I just recently have really wanted to pick up a general lee but have not been able to find the cash yet.

I raced BMX -- both ABA and NBL -- from age 14 to 18. After 18 I was a roadie for a few years, than a MTBer, then I took the rest of my life off until mid last year. At that point I picked up a new roadie, and my son took up ABA BMX (at age 14, no less). EVERY time we go to the track I feel a deep seating longing to pick up a cruiser and get back out there. As it is I pulled out my mid 80's Free Agent and am currently restoring it, and I've obtained an early Trek mountain bike (hard-tail, very BMX cruiser like) that I use to to street tricks with my son.

Something tells me that I'll be back on the track sooner than I think.

i'm 28. i used to own a 20" redline from jr high until mid way through college. i gave it to my cousin... i have a 24" kona bmx cruiser now. it's fun as crap. i mostly just ride it around town, but do a tiny bit of dirt jumping on it and goof off at a bmx track if i'm so inclined.

I'm 28 and mostly ride street anymore. I don't ride as much as I used to, but I still ride (poorly). Its funny BMX got me back into bikes when I was 16. At age 25 I got a fixed gear for commuting. Now my basement looks like a bike shop and I don't put bikes together with hammers anymore.

that is exactly what I said to my friend upon buying a headset cup press to install a CK headset. For the last 12 years all it has taken is a 2x4 and a hammer. Not to mention all the other tools and the bike stand, which is quite a please to use opposed to the floor in my parents living room back in the day. Anyway, I also raced in the ABA for a few years, when I was 12-16. Good times......

I sold my '89 GT Pro Freestyle Tour for $100 about 5 years ago, I miss it. The buyer stripped off the best parts and left the rest to rot in his backyard. My brother has my old Redline so at least it's still in useful service.

I raced NBL from when I was 10 until I was 16. I rode trails sometimes to... I grew up near west palm beach and rode a bunch with corey nastazio... or nasty as we called him. It was loads of fun until I was working so hard training that I didn't have time for a life outside of BMX so I quit. I didn't get on a bike again until about 2-3 years ago. Now all I ride is my track bike, but I always have a feeling that I should get back on the bmx bike.

i still ride both. my last girlfriend bought me a haro a few years ago to replace a redline i'd had for about 15 years. i ride fixed a lot more, but i still drag out the haro every now and then. this actually reminds me that i need to get some lighter components for it. that thing weighs a ton.

I used to ride alot of bmx, especially park and street. I went to woodward camp (anyone familiar?) and got in the highest group, i'm pretty proud of that. I rode without pegs and getting on a fixed and doing everythign with the pedals felt very natural.

I raced BMX on and off as a kid from when I was 10-13 on a blue Haro... my first "nice" bike. I actually started out racing on a Kmart Murray that had a front steel wheel, and the rear coaster brake wheel replaced with an alloy freewheel setup, rear hand brake only.

i still ride bmx, but only about 25% of my bike riding is on my bmx, 75% on my fixed. I want to even it out a bit but its a little hard to do so since most of my free time is spent commuting from one place to another its much easier to do it on a fix. I have been riding bmx for over 14 years and i still suck but it is definetly the love of my life. i currently have 3 bmx bikes.

nice. i feel like I'm 16 when I'm on my 20 inch. and I still put bikes together with a hammer and a screwdriver. that hasn't changed. :)

i still ride bmx. i had a recent stint with flatland for the past two years but i find myself riding ramps and street more than flat nowadays....

yeah cardstock, austin is the bmx capital of the world! there are so many bmxers here and the weather is perfect year round. that is why i probably see so many types of riders here. Speaking of seeing lots of riders i usually see about 4-6 fixed gear riders on my five min ride to campus each day. we are everwhere.
