Upgrading IRO crank/BB, how to get the right one?

I am thinking of upgrading my IRO crank/BB at some point in the future. The rear wheel has a 42 mm chainline, the BB has a 110 width. Do I need to match the 110 width, or would a sugino crank/bb with a 109 mm width work just as well? Is there something about the sugino crankset that makes up for that lost millimeter?

Thanks.

Not quite as well, but I do it; no problems. It's a millimeter. Some people claim you can notice a difference, though.

The only widely available 109 BB is the Sugino, I think, and it's 90 bucks or so.

If you're replacing the crank and teh BB at the same time, and get a combo with a 42mm chainline, you're cool. Spindle length just has to be appropriate for the crank.

How do I know if the combo is appropriate for a 42mm?

42mm is the standard track chainline - if you buy track-specific stuff you will be fine.

In my experience, the matching BB with the proper crank is wonderful. It feels like butter -- smooth, silent and strong.

However, I ran a 107 and prior to that a 110 Shimano BB with my Sugino 75 set. Close enough and servicable. I thought it was pretty spot on until I actually installed the Sugino 75 BB and it was quite the difference. I thought I wouldn't notice but I did.

You might not notice it for street -- but on the track I felt it.

One of the small wonders is Campy cranks -- they have a standards 111 or 102 (depending on what cranks you but - double, triple, etc) but their track cranks take 111 which they have very affordable BB's in since that size covers various cranks in their product line.

Your other options for a 109 BB are the Shimano cartridge track BB and I've heard good things about the 110 Phil Wood BB being run with Sugino 75's.
