Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Nice Ride in 1 gear

Hello, Single Speeders.

I'm usually over in the Recumbent Threads discussing my hi-tech, cadence computered, GPS guided, 18 gear, worry about every possible decision complication of a bicycle.

Anyway, last week I was traveling, wanted to ride, so I jumped on the only thing around, a beat up single speed beach cruiser.
Had to pedal backwards a full revolution or so before the coaster brake started to engage, and then forward a rev to get the wheels turning again. Quite possibly the simplest hunk of junk I have ever ridden.

For some unexplainable reason, that was one of the most relaxing, enjoyable rides in recent memory.

Preacher, meet the choir.

(ok, maybe not those NJS-obsessed folks over there, but the rest of us are on your wavelength. )

coaster brakes are hilariously awesome. some dudes here in richmond ( https://www.richmondrecycles.com -- this is my favorite place ) make their own coaster brakes for single speed road bikes... i kinda want to try one out.
