i picked up this stem the other day, and it's got a feature i've never seen before; there's a steel plate that the bar-clamp bolt threads into, rather than threading into the other side of the clamp as on all other stems i've seen.

anyone know anything about this setup? the stem is perfectly normal in all other repects, including the njs stamp.

(at first i thought it might have been a really clever fix for stripped clamp, but the 'pat. pend.' stamp makes me think otherwise).

how's the metal underneath the plate?
maybe it was ground off and this was brought over from a different stem?

juvi-kyle 01-25-06 07:32 PM

that is how the pearl clamp works, **** is hot

speaking of crazy nitto stuff, has anyone had a look at that nitto 65 seatpost, good stuff

I have one too.
It's an old one, probably from 80's. at least it's that way in nitto catalogue from 1980.

thanks for that trespasser.

i guess they discontinued it 'cause it was unnecessary and expensive? too bad, it's super-pretty.

great info! thanks for the heads-up indeed

hmm, anyone know anything about nitto date codes? the stem is stamped 'TW', which looks like a date to me (another one i have is stamped 'XR')

eyefloater 01-25-06 07:57 PM

Err ... disregard my brain.

trespasser 01-25-06 07:58 PM

I don't know anything about the datecode, but here's the link to 1980 nitto catalogue.

has nothing to do with the date...

TW stands for Totally Wicked, XR is for eXtremely Rad...

however, the TW could also indicate some kind collaboration with Don's brother Tom...

jitensha! 01-25-06 08:29 PM

my non-njs nitto track stem has the same setup.

jayrooney 05-22-06 10:58 AM

I just got this stem in the mail. It's got japanese writing on the insertion shaft.
I can't read japanese, but i'm guessing it says "min. insertion line"
It's got that same steel bolt/clamp assembly that dolface's stem has.
It also has a groove-less aluminum wedge.
Anybody read japanese that can translate?

correcto

Jesse M 05-22-06 11:38 AM

i've got the same stem. never really paid attention to the other nittos, and thought they were all like that. now i know.

vomitron 05-22-06 11:42 AM

Gotta love the Japanese for saying "please" even when they're telling you not to insert a stem past a certain point.

edit: That clamp thing makes a lot of sense; snap the bolt in a hard effort and you replace the plate, not the stem.

absntr 05-22-06 12:10 PM

Those old Jaguars are nice. The Pearls, as mentioned have the plate which I find a bit more satisfying, knowing that if I stripped it, at least I could get a replacement plate and screw potentially.

The Girl has a Nitto stem as well which is a road stem (my old stem) which I believe also has the plate.

teadoggg 05-22-06 12:18 PM

dolface/jayrooney, I've got the same stem in 100m. I love the metal screw-in plate. And the japanese writing is fun! I though it was going to say something really profound, but eferrar told me that it was "max insertion line". talk about a buzzkill.

any idea on how to get replacement plates
for these stems? i lost the plate on an older
one i have and just used a washer/nut and stainless
hexscrew instead. it works fine, but it'd be nice to get
a replacement to make it all proper and ****.

shants 05-22-06 02:01 PM

aye, i have the same stem as well in 80mm. it's nice.
