Bottomed out !! Almost Ouch !

I bottomed out making a tight left turn today ...

It scared the shizzle out of me.. lol

Now I think I should try and get myself a shorter crank set.....

Anybody have reocmmendations for under $ 100 ??

Ebay has mostly sugino and a few others,... I currently have some old sugino VP's... I THINK they are no less than 170mm , maybe even longer......

I do plan to swap from the 27 inch wheels to 700c, so maybe someone can suggest something that will be compatible with the future wheels that I want......

I guess you mean you experienced a pedal strike. When you switch to 700c wheels, you're going to lower your bottom bracket even more, so you should run a crankset of at least 165mm if not shorter.

You could also try to find pedals with more clearance.

I also bottomed out at the velodrome yesterday ... it was not as bad as todays incident but I don't plan to use my street bike on the track anymore either.. lol

I figured it wouldnt make a big difference until today... ALMOST OUCH !

It could have been bad.. I was making a sharp left turn and crossing on-coming traffic.. If I had gone down, the cars would have been right on top of me ! LOL

DEAD FF.

yeah, you had pretty long cranks on there, didn't you? go at least 170. and 165 is actually pretty nice.

I use the bulletproof cranks (165mm). They are nothing fancy, but definitely get the job done. Got them pretty cheap ($20) and they come in black or silver. I see them all of the time for $35ish. If I remember correctly they have a 110 bcd which gives you a ton of options for chainrings. You need a square taper BB for these cranks.

Ben Bike's has Sugino RDs and XDs (I think that's right) on their ebay shop for under $90.

No offense but bulletproof cranks are perhaps the ugliest bike component ever made.

^^^True, but fordfasterr is the man because all of his bikes are so ugly that they are great. Bulletproof is prolly the best bet.

Just as a point of reference.. I know that sometimes price is deceptive vs quality ... specially on ebay so ..

Which of the above linked sugino crank sets are better ? The RD(48t) or XD (46t) ?

any big difference between them besides the price ?

I wonder if these will simply bolt onto my existing BB ?

dude, your bikes are cheapo DIY masterpieces. dont buy expensive unnecessary stuff unless you get a blinging track frame. bulletproof will do the trick. if you dislike the logo, spraypaint.

+1 for bulletproofs. i mean, if its a cheap bike in the first place, theres no reason to go nuts on the drivetain. although i have dimensions on mine, they are pretty much the same. on a nicer bike i would say yeah jump for something around 90 or so, but for my 4130 nishiki frame it didn't seem like it was worth it. i prob wont upgrade it until i get a nicer bike.

If it's a cheap frankenbike, I would get something used. And the avatar is hard for me to look at too.

I have a GPX crank on my '59 Raleigh. There should be a number, I think on the inside of the drive-side crank arm, giving its length.

Sugino RDs and XDs are hardly going nuts.
Pretty low end cranks, yet not as ugly as the bullerproof.

Sora is just a 105 crank with steel rings instead of aluminum, that's why Sheldon recommends them for fixers. However, I don't think they make any without the lame Octalink interface. Maybe you can find some old ones.

If bulletproof cranks are too ugly, you can get dotek's from Danscomp. They are the exact same thing, just without the lame "BULLETPROOF" screening on it.

Someone asked how cranks are measured: center of the bottom bracket spindle --> Center of the pedal spindle, typically in millimeters. my Sugino's are all stamped on the inside of the cranks.

You might want to check them out first, fordfasterr: On my World Sport (admittedly Sugino Aero Maxy probably weren't original...) 170mm were on it when I found it.
