    homosapien road kill

I almost took out this lady while heading high speed down a winding curvy descent just now. She looks up at me for a second, and then decides to RUN into the street with her head down. At this point, I'm like...fuk...this lady is wilin' out cause she def doesn't see how fast I'm approaching her, so I veer left into the oncoming lane cause there is no traffic on the way, and this oblivious woman is STILL running...I'm saying out loud....no, no, no, no...cause I wanted her to chill out, and stop acting like a squirrel jumping into the road and darting everywhere. She continues running and almost runs into me, as I buzz by her along the far left side curb. As I pass by her and continue along.. yelling out to her to "pay attention". I'm glad I didn't hit her because she def would have caught the worst of it.
This is why people get hit by cars a lot of the time....running into the street and not looking. She would have been much better off at least looking at me while she was trying to avoid me, or simply stopping or walking slowly so that I could easily judge where she was going. But no!...she wants to do the stupidest thing possible...dart around with her head down...not cool.

some pedestrians really need a clue. the other night, i was coming up to a stop sign. no cars, just one ped crossing in front of me. i start to veer to the left, to go around behind him. he stops in his tracks--right in my path. i turn to the right, to go in front of him instead of hitting him, he starts moving, i veer further to the right, annoyed with him, and he makes some snarky comment as i go by. ******.

anyway, why do pedestrians do that so much? we can't tell very well where they're going till they're there and right in our path. if they'd just stand still, or continue as they were going, it'd be easy to go around them. when they keep moving around, 8 times out of ten, they just move themselves back into my path. it's awfully annoying to try so hard to avoid hitting people who are doing **** to help themselves. next time maybe i'll just keep going. run into them and say, as we get up "i moved, then all of a sudden you were back in front of me, you moron".

I know this mean but sometimes you can trap them in your gaze. When they look at you, and they frozen in the lane (jaywalkers), wiggle your front wheel keep them guessing as to which way you are going. I used to call it getting the ped to do the dance of death. Dance Muther F%$ker!!!! I are guilty of making jaywalkers dance.

ha ha, i can see how that'd be fun, but i want peds to STOP dancing...trust that i'm going to try not to hit them, stand still, and let me work my magic. or something like that.

I'm a ped much of the time. Almost as much as a cyclist. and when I was couchhopping, I spent most of my time in the streets, sometimes sleeping outside. My point is that my experience as a pedestrian gives me my philosophy, which follows the law. Pedestrians deserve utmost respect from all motorists and cyclists. Even if they are jaywalking, they're purely defenseless. Yield to them.
And in turn cars ought to yield to cyclists and peds, no matter how much they break the law.

A few of you sound like the motorists that hate cyclists with a tinge of elitism.

I just don't look at them. I know they're gonna do something stupid so I pick a line and stick w/ it. Doesn't always work though.

It doesn't fit in their little lemming get-me-across-this-street brains that you might actually be in control of something, they are used to running and jumping away from cagers. Whole different mindset..... they don;t get it that when the bike comes flashing around the corner to just stand still and enjoy the breeze as we "wiff" jacket to jacket.

Deer-in-the-cateye peds are much more dangerous than those who just ignore us and continue on their business.

Have you ever seen mothers who, seeing a rider (or car) coming, challenging them for pavement, push their baby carriages in front of them into the street, thinking "no one would ever hit a baby, so they'll have to let me pass"? Me neither, but I've heard about it, and it sounds quite Darwinian.

it's not that, it's a matter of the fact that so much of the time, when they're in my way, i move. then they move, too. then they're in my way again. and i'm still going toward them at a much higher speed than they probably think. i think i'm annoyed that i'm trying to keep 'em safe and they keep jumping back in front of me again.

I usually use a hand or head gesture to show my intentions. If you have to yell at people to move, most likely you are out of controll.

Sorry but they are not defenseless when they choose to step into traffic when they shouldn't be. Defenceless is being hit at a crosswalk. No excuse for that. No one thinks about actually a pad but jumping into traffic is the easiest way to stack the desk against you. Everyone will try to avoid you but sometimes it simply isn't possible. You know you aren't supposed to be in the middle of the damned road but it's eveyone else's fault you got nailed. If I'm buzzin up an oncoming lane or a one way and something happens to me I give way as I'm the one doing wrong (by-the-book), if I got nailed I'd not say a thing to the driver as it was my riding that got me there. Peds are as much a part of the environment as cars and bikes.... if we all acted accordingly then no one would ever get hurt now would they? When I was messin' in MTL I hit a 6 year old who was holding mom's hand as she walked him out from behind a double parked truck and across traffic, I barley had time to squeeze the break, being in between the car and the truck. Hand caught the kid right on the side of the face. He is fine, but he went to the hospital, I was a mess, shaking....thinkin I'd killed a child. Mother was charged..... thanks for the witnesses that stayed.

Yelling at peds just confuses them more. Let their survival instincts judge which way to move.

Really though, some folks should have to have a license to get out of bed in the mornings, cyclists, motorists or pedestrians-I just try to ride as defensively as possible to minimize the potential harm another's idiocy could cause me.

i don't know. if yr talking about the OP, i disagree. i think tei is right and that his post was well reasoned and fair. he didn't aim for her. he's not whining about her. he just seemed to be suggesting that for her own safety (because of her lack of defenses) she should have paid attention.

everyone on the road--vehicle or no--has to pay attention. it's endlessly frustrating to be the only one paying attention in a potential accident situation and to then have the person/vehicle/cyclist you're trying to avoid do everything to work against you.

I'm not sure why, but I think people only register cars as dangerous in their brains. No cars in sight = go.
I have had crowds start walking through cross walks while I had the green. I have to start screaming before anyone realizes they're about to get hit. Even worse, the same thing has happened with other bikers.

Maybe I'm invisible and just don't know it. How shall I test this theory?

Just pretend you're invisible, same as you should with cars. Half the time it's true anyway, or even if they can see you they usually have no idea how fast you might be going. I've also found that it's usually better to cut right behind people instead of right in front of them, the first instinct seems to be to jump forward not back.

As Tei pointed out, she miscalculated the speed. That is the No.1 reason these things happen, peds don't understant that we are going as fast as any other traffic.

we don't have engines. Therefore our top speed must be that of a running human being... I think that's the mindset of the average pedestrian

I always assume I'm invisible..... I've heard ' I'm sorry I didn't see you...' too many times for it not to be true.
