Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

That's awesome. I've always thought that something like that (but fixed of course) would be great for bike polo.

Wrenched on it a little today. Just enough to know I'm not riding an alleycat on that thing tomorrow. Not that I'll be fast, but I just don't trust the brakes. It's fun as hell to whiz around on.

I almost picked up a 16" one that was at my local shop a while ago. I regret not doing so, they're fun.

I acquired a folding bike that was in pretty rough shape last year. I began stripping the paint off it last winter. Hopefully I will get around to painting it soon and rebuilding it as a fixed gear. It's a Bianchi folding bike from the 70's. All the QR levers on it are Campagnolo. I plan to build a wood crate on the back so I can carry a case or two of beer.

The only info I could find on this bike was that you could buy it for $25 and empty packets of Funny Face drink mix.

You're showing a lot of seatpost there.

Is the Raleigh Twenty a three-speed? I've been thinking of converting a Sturmey Archer hub to a two-speed fixed for some time.

sweet... i have the same one but in green. it's pretty minty too. i'm in the midst of fixing it. i keep changing my mind about the component choice though, b/c i want them to compliment the oldschooliness of the bike. post some pics when it's done, i'd love to see it.

btw, i did a LOT of research on folders before i got the twenty, and from what i found it's probably the best of the few folders worth fixing. all of that cheap wierd knock-off **** is just death-traps. especially u-frames. just a warning to anyone else who's looking to fix one of these. if you get a no name one for cheap, have a blast, but be careful. but if you're seeking one out for a project, hold out for a twenty.

I've had this bike for a couple weeks now and it is driving me crazy! It sits in the basement mocking me. I can't decide what to do with it. Should I restore it all original in it's gaudy glory? Should I keep it "cute" for the next (probably undeserving) girl that I date? Should I hot-rod the hell out of it ala Sheldon's fixed twenty.
I could dump a lot of money into it to get a decent fun fixed gear or single speed, but how much would I really ride it? I have other bikes that are more appropriate for daily use. Keeping it heavy and gaudy, I'll probably never really ride it. I'm confused.

On another note since I mentioned girlfriend bikes, YAYA! My ex gave me back the Lotus I built her. At least now I can try to give it to someone that will give it a good home. Freshly rebuilt with quite nice early 80's parts. Or I'll use it for my binge and puke on it like I did last summer.

Almost forgot...one of my fears on this thing is pedal strike. I imagine going fixed on this will make pedal strike a fairly common occurrence. Opinions?

build a new 20" fixed wheel around an inexpensive hub and a cheap BMX rim. Keep the rest stock. that way it'll never take long to switch between stock and fixed. If you don't like it fixed, either sell the wheel, or take it apart and write off the cost of the rim and spokes.

Or you could just put a BMX wheel on it for SS or Suicide fix.

That thing is hawt, and 20's are as bombproof as you're going to get with a folder. Plus, that thing is shi-i-i-i-iny.

To avoid the pedal strike, just do sweet hocky-stop skids around every turn.
