Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

HELP! Did I get ripped off?!?

Here's the deal:
Been looking for red anodized rims for a while now. It seems no one makes them anymore.
I've got an all black bike, been riding the same set of Phil hubs/silver Open Pros for about 4 years now.
A few months ago I ordered the Velocitys in red...thinking it would be anodized.
WRONG!! They arrived and they were fugly. FUGLY. This powdercoated orangey-reddish color...completely garish...aesthetic ipecac.
I told the bike shop (Pacific Bikes) that I was definitely NOT interested in the rims...that I thought they'd be anodized not painted... the cats at the shop were cool..no prob; they sold the rims to someone elsealmost immediately.
Fast forward to two days ago...I'm gettin' my bike revamped and I figure it's time to piss, ****, or get off the pot. So I call about ten bike shops in town (San Francisco) and ask if they have any NOS red anodized rims...NADA. I then call Road Rage bicycles and dude says they can order some Mavic CXP33's
I'm stoked that there are still some anodized rims out there but bummed 'cause the sidewalls are machined and that means non-continuity in the wheel color scheme.
Ok, I'm babbling so here's the point:
The guy ordered a PAIR (2) Mavic CXP33's in the red anodized finish.
The price: $260 (!!!!!!!!) (after tax)....
and that's just the rims, folks!
I was kind of in shock and just paid the amount...but the more I think about it the more ****ed up I feel.....
Did I get completely ripped off?
I don't think they do the red anodized finish anymore so maybe that's why they were so expensive...
But $260???
I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination and I'm feeling taken advantage of..
Remember, these are ANODIZED Mavic CXP33's.
Does anyone have an opinion or better yet knowledge of how muchthese rims go for?
It seems that $70 is the going rate for a CXP33..so why did I pay twice that?!?
Thanks for your help, its appreciated!

You're correct, those retail for about $70 a piece, I paid less than that for mine. Maybe the shop just made a mistake?

Lunigma, those are mountain bike rims. For what it's worth, cxp 33s generally fetch pretty high prices on ebay.

I would talk to RoadRage, they're a great bike shop. They definitely do not try and rip people off.

$260 for just a pair of rims is whacky. CXP-33s should not cost that much money, they're ok but not made of gold. Did they not quote you before ordering? They're generally very up front with their prices.

I also can't belive you just paid for them without questioning it.

There has to be more to this somehow.

I've been keeping my eyes out for these exact rims. And that price seems way high. These just sold on ebay for $96

I definitely know that I'm getting only the rims...
I already told the guy that I was gonna lace them to the Phils I already have..
The only thing I can think of is that Mavic doesn't manufacture the red anodized rims anymore and these are NOS. I was also looking for Mavic MA40's and I called the Bike Nook out here and they charge $120 a rim for those...the guy at Bike Nook said that his cost for the rims is $90 each.
By the way, I did order the CXP33's from Road Rage....
I'm gonna call the guy back and try to get my money back...see if I can return them and find something cheaper somewhere else. I admit I screwed up on this. Let's hope the dude doesn't get all pissed at me, 'cause I did pay for them already..
Oh, and about aesthetics: I think anodizing looks way better than painting.
Thanks for your comments, though...much appreciated.

I'm not sure how he could "order" you Mavic CXP 33s because they are no longer in production. Unless he had a hookup that was selling them for way more than they're worth.

Besides those linked above, another set of red Open Pros sold for $130 on eBay. No way their worth that much money.

If you're looking for red anodzied rims, contact Marcus at Yojimbo's Garage. He has FIR Net 97 rims available in red. He said that the finish isn't as nice as the Mavics but they're really strong rims. He quoted me $53 / piece.

Here's a pic -

Sorry, I meant red anodized CXP 33's.

I know of an online (UK) store that has one 36 hole in stock, if that helps anyone.

hey kevin..some advice

when you go in.. keep the guns in the holster..they quoted you a price and you paid it..so youre basically asking for a favor.. no matter how overpriced they are.. its a pretty specific item.. as opposed to a new fuel pump or something.. so they can expect that you know what youre buying and for how much..

be nice.. or enjoy your expensive rims

you haven't seen good mavics sold on ebay for 5 bucks. let's just get that straight right now.

Yeah, you got ripped, you should probably have gotten a quote before showing up with the checkbook.
