Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I didn't particularly like it, but some of you guys might get a kick out of it. And one of you might even be the subject of the article. Heh.

Enjoy.

i always hate it when articles and essays end with some pseudo-witty use of the phrase or word that is the title (or, in this case, the subtitle). it seems so cheap to me.

- so the whole point of the article is: "I was careless, didn't pay attention while cleaning my bike, and almost lost part of a digit." ???

- i guess if he had been in Wood Shop in high school and working on a table saw, the article could have been titled, "One Less Woody" ???

:-)

campy hat, yes..... BUT... the article says:

"a dominatrix belt, and an enormous messenger bag that had a patch that read “one less fixie.” The patch was a take on to the bike activism sticker, “one less car,” a movement predominantly filled with bike punks (that look just like him) who ride fixies. During the show, he always seemed to end up in front of me and I couldn’t take my eyes of that “one less fixie” patch. It felt directed at me."

this is untrue! i wore no such belt. that's an exaggeration, and i also stood off to the side for the whole show, up on top of the ice machine, so i could take pictures. the author's "artistic license" is a bunch of lies!

anyway, here's the evidence!

what sort of belt was it? i mean, could it have been exaggerated to be a "dominatrix" belt? studded or some such?

Once, when they told me i was lucky to be alive considering that my tonsel had nearly cut off my breathing passage. But no, no wheelchair. I've twice been in a wheel chair both after scheduled surgery to repair things on the bottom half. (no wheelchair for the broken collarbone either)

especially crappy for the writer. it's the editor's job to paraphrase the article wittily in the hed and dek, not just to lift the best line, which in this case was also the payoff. yet another reason why that paper sucks

edit: but the writer is obviously a gigantic ****** so **** him too
