Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

crossed over to the dark side tonite...

So I went over to the road forum to talk about my new road bike, and it just reminded me of why I hang out here. There are threads on GREASE, REFLECTORS, and other innane trivial crap, with scores of people who don't have a ****ing clue what they are talking about speaking like they are the voice of God. Its soooo nice to be back over here.

What's funny about the reflector thread is how many folks don't use them only because they're worried they're buddies will poke fun at them. Luckily, everyone over here has practical bikes that don't look like anyone else's.

No kidding, I got fender and the blinky light that can be seen from 2mi, and I have reflective tape from a BF member on the way to put some sweet racing stripe on my fenders. The road forum truely baffles me.

I dunno, the stereotype of "roadie tools" is definitely got a valid basis in reality, but some of the stuff that gets posted in this forum can be idiotic and elitist, too. I generally come here more because of two reasons-
1.The bikes are prettier-people don't have such a hard on for CF and unobtanium components. Some people will post about how badly they need a $3000 carbon fiber kickstand with absolutely no sense of irony. Silly.

2. People tend to have a better sense of humor over here. I think it's because a lot of people on this forum are closer to my age.

Ha ha, BTW, I asked about ordering some downtube shifters from somebody at my LBS, and he said they couldn't because they were "ancient technology." I know of tons of places online I could order them from, I was just offering him the sale to "support my LBS," and all that. What a tool. Of course he tried to sell me some STI, though.

I love my gears too, but I just can't relate to most of those discussions.

The topic of fenders always cracks me up on that forum, as do the posts with pictures of "rain bikes" without them.

i often miss my roadie days. what road life taught me, is that every time i think nitto bars are expensive, i just have to think of all the $350 monocoque carbon bars i could be buying instead.

now, i'm not a roadie, but you think that this board is not filled with innane trivial crap? with scores of people saying stupid, inflamatory bull**** based in hearsay? yeah, i'm sure it's nice to be out of the unfamiliar stupid discussions, but come on, we've got plenty here.

^^ what queerpunk said.

I race road bikes but have been riding a fixed wheel bike on and off for over 15 years. I have found in the old days (ha ha ha) that the track and roadie crowds were similar in that they loved their sports and there bikes and the open road in a down to earth kind of way. And then something happened. Maybe it’s the super informational overload, maybe the 3 time then 7 time winner of the TDF. I've definitely known some track riders that were just as obsessed with gear as the rodies that you speak.

I frequent the other forums much more these days. I always see this forum as "home" though. I find that much like real life, in every forum here, you just have to filter through the bull****.

I dont know, as much as there is innane and trivial crap here sometimes, its at least

a) interesting
b) someone calls it out as innane and trivial and hilarity ensues
c) you don't have people that have no freaking clue what they are talking about giving "expert" advice in every single thread

BTW Matt, your saddle is in a box sitting on my desk staring at me--I'm going to be mailing her off today.

What gets me about the Road forum is that everyone seems to talk about their "club." As if you can't ride alone or informally with friends, you have to be in a club.
