TODAY (2/22): Bikes, the Police, and You - 6:30 Cardozo Law School

I've posted this on "Advocacy," but am posting it here as well, since there are so many New Yorkers in this forum.

    Bikes, the Police, and You
    Cardozo Law School
55 Fifth Avenue (at 12th Street)
    February 22, 2006 - 6:30 PM
    Room 206
The New York City Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and FreeWheels are
pleased to announce a panel on the last 17 months of police repression of
Critical Mass in New York City. It will be all you ever wanted to know
about the practical and legal struggles faced by 'cyclists. Since the
Republican National Convention, over 315 people have been arrested for
riding their bicycles on Critical Mass. Over 80 people have tried to fight
their charges to trial, come hear how they've faired.
In January, the Honorable Judge Harris ruled New York City's parade
permitting scheme is unconstitutional, but found all the riders guilty of
disorderly conduct. The City is appealing the ruling. Come hear why the
ruling is important. Learn about the City and the riders' appeal.
Each month the NYPD does something new and inventive to arrest people for
riding their bikes. Come hear a month by month break down on policing
tactics and an overview of the disproportional response by our City to a
peaceful bicycle ride. Come learn about what's happening on our streets.
Hear about last weeks victory in the City v. Time's-Up!
Come learn about why all those police officers have video cameras. Find
out what a TARU is. No, it's not something on a bike tire. Hear from
attorneys who are suing the City over their surveillance tactics and
    unconstitutional arrests.

Hahah, I'm the AV guy there. I have to work another event during this one.

I can probably record it though if there is really interest?

I'll see what I can do. Can't promise anything. Video may be out since I have to work another event but I could definitely get it on audio and put up an mp3.

I'll have to get the participants to sign off on it though (since this is a law school and all).

Headed out now. NYers should swing by. It's not the most exciting thing happening this week (CM+partaaayyy on Friday!!!), but it's always good to be on the up and up when it comes to bikes and the law.

+1 we've got a criticalmass here in RVA this friday (meet at 4pm in monroe park...ride starts at 5) and it's the first one in two years... the last one apparently ended with police officers pepper spraying entire intersections as cyclists rode through. soo it should be interesting

so unfortunately i wasn't able to make it, but i'd love to hear the audio if it was actually recorded. I can also donate some bandwith for a day or two to host the audio files if needed.
Culture? Art? Making a difference? Hey, go **** yourself. We're too busy drinking, doing drugs, trying to **** random people and you want us to make money on top of all that? Really?

    Well, ****. I don't give a ****.

Drop me an email if someone has audio of the meeting hosted. I toss it up on the velospace tracker.

I didn't get to record it, but at least one person audio taped it and another couple video taped it. I guess you could probably talk to those involved and find out who that was videoing it and request a copy/transcript from them.

And that free food and booze were for the concurrent IP conference that was going on downstairs. The mix of them with all the bike punx was pretty funny.

I sat through most of it, and in short it was a recap of the ongoing CM problems, info on the suits concerning the CM arrests and the constitutionality of 'parading without a permit', more specific information on what Free Wheels itself is doing, a broader scope picture on civil rights lawsuits and the long running fight about what the city can and can not do with regards to politcal and activist groups and some specifics about what you should and should not do if and when arrested.
