Saw a copy of the data book.
Damn, the only new things in cycling in the last hundred years are integrated shifters and compact geometry.

I'm not entirely shure of the story, but, in the early eightys, a japanese bicycle firm had a book compiled from sketches, ads and prints of frames and components from europe since the bicycle was invented. it was called the data book because that is what it said on the cover.

freewheels, derailures, pneumatic tires?
The bicycle as we know it is not much more than 100 years old.

I think what should be said is not much stuff new in the last 60 years, the data book doesn't get into full swing untill the 40's. In the fortys the had: threadless headsets, clipless pedals, quick release, Aluminium, freewheels, derailleurs, pneumatic tires, sealed bearings (not cartridge), suspension. I'm not sure what a Detangling devices device is
the data book was published in 1983 by Mr. noruchi president of the Joto Ringyo company, it was basicaly his love child due to his obssesive collecting of midcentury bicycles, components and catalogs.
