should I trade/sell my road for a new fix

So I bought this trek 1000c road bike in aug. I loved the 27 gears but let's face it. It's not much of a work out. It cost me like 650 plus 100 in upgrades. after i got my fixed, it's just been sitting there. I thought I'd keep it since I could only climb the bridge with the road, but all of a sudden, I can climb the bridge and hugh hills on the fix, and I'm not exhusted. Sooooo...... what the hell should I do. I could probably sell it for a nice price and get an iro or something sweeter than my mercier. I also wanted to start doing the bike tours like tour de bronx and the century, but I don't know if I could finish on a fixed, but I also didn't think I could ever make it over the bridge on the fix.

crushkilldstroy 02-26-06 07:28 PM

i've seen nyc. there are no "hugh hills" in nyc.

visitordesign 02-26-06 07:32 PM

an iro's not gonna be tons different than the mercier.

i'd either hang on to the road bike or wait til you can afford to sell it plus throw in a bit and get a frame of significantly greater quality than the mercier.

you could probably ride to piermont on any fix after riding at least 6 days a week for a couple of months on it. that's a really fun fixed ride.

DianaG4 02-26-06 07:32 PM

there is when you go the uptown. like 135. that is what mahttan stands for, hugh hills. you probably didn't go to the hood.

junioroverlord 02-26-06 07:33 PM

You can always use a roadie. It's nice having options.

DG4's right. there are a few big hills in northern manhattan, but they're short. they aren't long grades. the bridges are all a little steep. central park has some long, slow grade changes. i wouldn't say that anything in manhattan is a huge hill though. there are some good ones on Rt 9W though--at least one or two huge hills there. but that's not NYC.

DianaG4 02-26-06 07:38 PM

damn, i thought more people would suggest I sell it. I don't know why, but I want a new fixed bike and I just got a new one like 1 week ago.

i think its just hills.. or hilly island..no "huge" ..but then alot of the hills have been bulldozed.. so it doesnt really make sense.. but keep the road bike.. its a fun switch..

been uptown. your hills are bush league.

DianaG4 02-26-06 07:44 PM

ok, ok, i retract the word "huge" . but when you carrying 50lb of books and a think ass down jacket, winding blowing at your face freezing ur nostral hairs, those hills look, HUGE. but they are just small little hills. ok. better

genericbikedude 02-26-06 07:47 PM

^^^Naw, you didn't ride from 125 to 116th on amsterdam.

sloppy robot 02-26-06 07:51 PM

does kansas have any huge hills? just curious..

DianaG4 02-26-06 07:51 PM

i usually ride from queens, up the 59th street bridge, then zip through traffic to 59 columbus all the way to 135 and st. nick and than, up the largest hill i've ever seen to convent ave where city college is at. what is with amsterdam, i've ridden it before but those cab drivers are crazy, it's like they are on crack and there is a fire some where. they are alway clipping my bikes.

kcmo's a freaking river town so it's hilly as all get out. anywhere between downtown and midtown is ****ing torture if you don't keep the gearing down.

i rarely make it over to the kansas side of the metro. there really isn't any reason to go to kck unless you're looking to buy meth or have your car stolen.

Doctor Who 02-26-06 08:03 PM

A geared bike is going to give you a better workout if you're going for that, 'cause you can always keep it in something like 53x14 and just crank it. Sure, you could do something like that on a fixed-gear for the street, but you know you never would.

na975 02-27-06 06:08 PM

dont sell it, throw it in the east river.

hugh hills are rough in a think ass down jacket, i'll give you that.

1 week of riding fixed and you're already hating on your brand new bike? you also might want to read crayonensambles reply to your post about off the shelf bikes.

AfterThisNap 02-27-06 06:28 PM

You've effectively "hit the wall" in terms of your physical performance, where you've gotten a little better than you were before, but you haven't yet overcome larger obstacles. Ride the fixie hard until the hills are easy (I grew up in the MTNs, Wburg bridge isn't that bad at all) and then you'll find that you're quite a bit faster on the road bike.
If it's not hard enough of a workout for you, you aren't pushing hard enough. It's not the bike, it's the rider, blah blah blah...

ha! winner!

slopvehicle 02-27-06 10:05 PM

I don't know. Should I think about something to suggest to you, or should I just start a new thread asking for suggestions as to what I should suggest to you?

spud 02-27-06 10:28 PM

keep it.

Landgolier 02-28-06 12:32 AM

Can't get a workout on your geared bike? Bull. You need to get out on some good group rides, you'll get a workout. And by a workout I mean "dropped like a kid's mitten within the first 5 miles." Anyway, if you don't know how to get a workout on a road bike, you also won't be able to tell the difference between a mercier and an IRO. I'm probably picking a fight here, but an IRO is an incredible bike for its very reasonable price point, not a blistering performance machine.

HOWEVER...you have kind of a special situation. The trek 1000 is probably the best selling road bike out there, since it's the entry-level bike from the best-known name. 80% of them get sold to people who either won't stick with it or will get something better. So you're in a unique situation, in that you can probably buy the exact same bike you would sell today 2-3 years from now in pretty good shape for even less $$. I wouldn't say the same thing if you had a Felt F90 or a Bianchi Brava or whatever (assuming you liked the frame), but the reality is that the used market is going to be wall to wall with your exact bike in a couple of years. It sounds like the road bike just doesn't suit the kind of riding you want to do. In a couple years you may get bored of tooling around the city and want to stretch your rides out, or you may get forced to go geared by knee pain, but by that point shimano will probably have nixed the thumb button sora design and trek will have changed their line, and you will be able to snap that rig back up again.

crayonsemble 03-01-06 01:22 AM

if you really want a workout go down 2nd ave and then back up bowery,
with your pants leg rolled down. don't forget to not where a helmet,or
wonder about how cool you look riding that bike as you zip through traffic,
for the first no wait the second time ever.
just ride the isht out of the bike, everyday no matter what the weather is like,
eat healthy, and drink lots of water. after a year you will be in better shape,
and more ready for a new bike.
its not the bike anymore..

I spent a VERY long month in kck. I agree, it sucks. Also, why does there seem to be a shortage of gas stations in that town? (<-- not that I really give a ****, just curious).

OP, keep the roadie. Just like junioroverlord said, it's good to have options.
