I can't get my cog to shut up--it has this small clacking sound, seemingly of the chain falling over the cog as it's turning. Is this because of a messed up chainline--which I have gone to great lenghts to correct, and am pretty sure is very good--or is this a normal sound? Should I expect a completely silent drivetrain?

I think it MAY be because my chainring is NOT completely true--I notice that when I look at the chain as its turning, it wavers to one side maybe 1 mm every rotation--maybe this is making the chain "sound" like it's not completely striaght. Sigh...

Does it still make noise when you're riding in the street? My drivetrian makes that noise on the stand, too, but when I ride outside I can't here a thing. Sssssilent. Also, I never got silent until I used Tri-flow on my chain.

I love riding down the street at night hearing that very faint sound of the chain clicking into place on the cog.

i beleive the noise that you're hearing is when the chain's sideplate is coming into contact with a tooth of the cog. this happens because the chain is being pulled at a slight angle. when i set up my new drivetrain with a bb spacer i heard a clicking noise when rotating the pedals slowly. after i had removed it, the chain was pretty much dead silent. i should mention that I use chain tensioners to keep the wheel centered and the chain, well, tensioned.

check to make sure that your rear wheel is straight. otherwise it's likely a chainline issue.

maybe if it was less windy i could hear the rollers coming into contact with the bushings.

My drivetrain makes a gentle clacking noise pretty much all the time. I've got a perfect chainline as near as I can measure, so I figure it must be the rollers snapping against the cog as they make contact. I might try putting a little bit of thick grease on three or four spots between teeth on the cog to see if the sound becomes intermittent with the wheel rotation as a result. This is a brand new KMC bmx chain and a DA 15t cog.

The funny thing is that when I flip the wheel over to try out the 16t Shimano freewheel, it's dead silent. I think the teeth are shaped slightly differently on the freewheel or something.
