You can buy them, I forget who makes them, some japanese company, starts with a K i think.. I used to have a pair. Biggest problem was the leather would get scuffed up really bad from clips hitting the ground ocassionally.

The guy says they are Christophe clips, and googling Christophe clips leather or whatever just gets tons of stuff about straps. Can't find a Christophe company web site either, though that would probably be easier if I spoke French. Leather scuffage is fine, I'm trying to prevent shoe scuffage when I have to pose as a respectable human being.

these are better leather-wrapped toe-clips
they are steel, and nice... those ale ones have been known to snap constantly. i have snapped two sets, and have been witness to another three or four sets snapping while on rides with friends.
japanese co that starts with a K (and i might not be typing it just right) Kyokuto or something similar...

Hmm, if these are a scour ebay kind of thing I think I'm going to just DIY on my existing MKS clips -- I'm not expecting any XL size ones to turn up any time soon. Time for some dumpster diving to find some old shoes for leather stock.
Also, anybody else kinda dumb like me and went "Man, how would you hold a bike up with just cassette tape? That stuff isn't very strong. Where does he even see it?" before they noticed the awesome macgyver rig under the pedal?

Hey people:
1. Todd's a totally cool dude.
2. He built 3 bikes with me. One was fillet brazed, the other two TIG welded. I have an interesting way of fillet brazing and Todd wanted to see this and learn how to do this. After I stopped building professionally, I taught some framebuilding classes. For a few years, I was a guest presenter at Ryan Connolly's framebuilding class at Stanford University. Talked about fit, metallurgy, etc. Also showed people a bunch of little "trade secrets."
3. The bike was painted PPG Lemon Ice by Mark Leonardson of Minnetonka, Minnesota. He's one of the best painters in the world (I tried a lot of them!)
4. The rear dropouts are the "Sub 11.0" dropouts that Todd Cravens and I designed for Quality Bicycle Products many years ago. I believe these are now sold with "Surly" cast into them.
5. The fork is a style I started building in the early 1990's, right after Ernie Colnago made it popular. The crown is a hollow casting from Taiwan that I bought through Nova Cycles Supply of Rocklin, CA. It's an iteration of the very-beautiful, but heavy CCA crown from Cinelli (look at the pre-1990 Cinelli crowns that I think were cast by Tecnociclo-- they're really beautiful)
Best Wishes,
Mark Zeh
