Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bicycle Design Class

Just found this out from Academy of Art University in San Francisco..

I wish I am still a student and have tons of time to build my own frame....
Anyway I thought I just want to pass the word around.... I do not know the detail of the admin stuff....

IDS 499.01 (Bicycle Design) has been added for Summer 2006 on Mondays and Thursdays 8:30-2:50pm in room 340 at the Warehouse.

This class will cover, in depth, mechanical design elements, as well as materials and processes used in the manufacturing of bicycles. With a series of lectures and demos, each student will design and build a working bicycle frame from design to finish painting.Fee: 200.00
Prerequisites: Take IDS 134 and Obtain Department Director's Approval

Fee usually refers to money in addition to tution ringing the price up to more like $600ish...plus have you have to have that prerequisite which means you are probably student there. They could make bank by offering a class like that to the public for just $300.

School charges tuition by unit (550/unit) and almost all classes are 3 units, so that makes it a $1850 class.

The Crucible in West Oakland used to offer a 'build your own single-speed bike' class. Not sure if they still do or not, but it was around $400, I think. I've taken classes in torch, stick and MIG there, all of which were great introductions and have helped as I've taught myself TIG and brazing. You can also get discounts on classes there by volunteering (tool room, cleanup, class assistant, etc.)

I heard a rumor that there's some bicycle courses being offered next semester at my school, I'm trying to figure out if it's true, and what they are.
