cinelli track stem?
was wondering if someone can explain this picture to me. the only track stems i've ever owned are nitto, so when i saw this picture, i got confused.
in order from the top, the stems are:
1 - salsa classic pro stem
2 - cinelli 2/a
3 - nitto jag steel
4 - nitto jag alum
why is the cinelli stem missing that pressure block that locks it in place? do they use something better? is that picture just deceiving?

Cinelli's used to use a slot in the inserted part of the stem, with a conical wedge that pulled up inside and spread the stem at the slot. It was a common method but slightly more prone to cracking, and some riders feel that the wedge style (a la Nitto) is more secure.

I think it's there, but it's hard to see because it's not as loose as the other stems in the picture.
All of my Cinelli stems have them.

nitto does win, I've had all stems pictured except the steel nitto.
The Salsa is nice, but I'm not too hot on black stems, the Cinelli is nice, but the securing mechanism is prone to sticking, it has a cone that pulls up into the stem and spreads the tube out, that gets stuck really easy (yes, even if you grease it) and I end up having to hit the bolt really hard with a hammer to get it to un-stick. The Nitto is nice, I have a 110mm alloy that I'm not using right now...
Edit, also, some of the paint chipped off of the Salsa stem I had and underneath you could see the brazing that holds the clamp onto the body. I have a brazed bike, and trust it with my life, but it seems that a solid piece of metal is better than a joined piece, maybe I'm wrong...

A close up of the Cinelli stem. As you can see, i have tons of phil grease in there. It seems to hold firm enough but the wedge does tend to get stuck. I would agree that the nitto is the better design.
This is the stem. I am am under the assumption that this is a road stem even though i was told it was a track stem. I like it either way. Does anyone know any better?

Road stem/track stem, what's the difference? A 1" steer-tube is a 1" steer-tube AFAIK...
I guess maybe clamp width? Anyone?

angle, I believe.
can't really tell about that pinarell/cinelli stem though. it does have that lousy inner wedge clamp mechanism though. not the strongest.
