i started on mine last night a little before ten. i was up till 2 applying jasco and wiping it off, then applying more...so on and so forth. that was 4 hours of jasco-ing, and there are still spots where bits of clearcoat are still stuck to the frame, so i'll have to spend some time on it tonight.

did anyone else have this problem? it didn't take me long to figure out that it takes more jasco than i thought to strip the clearcoat off (i thought it would take very little, due to how much it hurt to get it on my skin), but later in the night i started wondering if i wasn't letting it sit long enough. either way, it took me 4 hours of putting jasco on, wiping jasco off, rubbing decals with an old library card, and repeating to get the thing looking decent, and there's still a crapload of clearcoat all over...what the hell am i doing wrong?!?!?!

arg.

edit: after reading the chain thread and getting paranoid, i'll ask this, too...i was going to remove my chain, but just decided to wrap it in plastic. i pushed the pin from one link out a little bit, then pushed it back in. i'm guessing that if i can't find that pin because it's just as far in as all the others, i'm oaky, right? just want to be reassured for my own peace of mind.

dood, gloves!

I used some nasty paint remover from Ace Hardware to strip the powdercoat off of an old MTB frame. That shiz was nasty. It's all about getting the right stripper.

nope. mine was instant. i used rock miracle, not jasco, and the clearcoat bubbled up within seconds of applying the stuff. i left it on for about five minutes then wiped it off, and away came the decals with it. very easy

wow. you bastard. maybe i should have used a different brand, but i was worried enough jasco would eat away the chrome if left too long.

and i did use gloves. my arms, well, the parts that weren't covered kept bumping the frame. grrrr....

man, jasco is no joke. even the smallest little dot of that crap burns like a pile of dead hookers on fire... which is hot in more ways than one... holla! how long were you leaving it on? was is cold in the area you were doing it? i think on the can the genie tells you it works slower when cold... i figured this out a few winters ago doing it in my garage in january.

as for your chain, push the pin in as far as the others. if it's stiff, bend it side to side at the stiff link until it moves freely.

don't scrape. just keep on applying more and more Jasco until it seems like you can't apply any more because it keeps on dripping off. Wait 15 minutes and apply more Jasco. Actually, just keep on continually applying Jasco for about 30 minutes.
Flip the bike and start on the other side of the frame, lathering it up for 30 minutes.
Flip it and scrape the **** off.
Flip is and scrape again.

ha ha ha...good one...

i guess i should have followed mrRed's plan. but now, all that's showing is chrome, just with some splotches of clearcoat still on...masking tape and do that, ****loads of jasco in those areas. oh, and scratching...yeah, i don't want to scrape the chrome. but i figured an old library card with moderate pressure wouldn't hurt, and it seems like it worked find.

I used Klean-Strip Premium Stripper from Home Depot (aerosol spray can, paste) to strip the paint off of a foundation-plated Raleigh.

Man, I was so proud of myself. This stuff is highly recommended; it was, like, 4 bucks. If you're tired of the Jasco, just go get a can of this and finish the job in a couple of minutes. It ate through paint and stickers and didn't touch the chrome, which I, too, was deathly afraid would get eaten.

There's a trick to using Jasco. If you just smear it on willy nilly it doesn't work. Get yourself a sponge brush, and apply the Jasco in ONE DIRECTION. (It actually says this on the label). Done correctly, it works killer. Smeared around, it's just an innefective, toxic, burny mess.
Oh, and the place here will sandblast and powdercoat your frame/fork one color for $75. I will never touch Jasco again.

one direction. that was probably my problem. i wasn't just slapping it on any which way, but i wasn't really making it unidirectional, either.

ah, well, it's too late now to do anything but get the last little bits...but maybe next time someone searches for "jasco" or "stripping pistas" or "chrome pista" or whatever, this'll come up so they won't do the things this moron did.

so, to summarize:
-one direction
-don't touch the stuff
-careful taking it off
-put a lot on, let it sit, put more on, let it sit, take it off
-or try something other than jasco

you should probably add "Well ventilated workspace" to this little time capsule of Pista strippage.

meh, i don't run a brake (though i'm thinking about doing so for the same reason i just bought a helmet...you can't outrun trouble forever)...i'm basically asking cuz i'm told you can't put a quill stem on a pista. and i really like quill stems.

i may just get a deda newton pista stem, though.

basically, just switch out headsets, find a fork (or thread existing one if possible), and a new stem and its done?
