Colorado Springs, Where to stay?

So I'll be in the Springs for 2 weeks and am thinking about where to stay on the cheap. I'll probably end up camping. Suggestions?

eleven mile canyon is gorgeous, but not too close to the Springs.

this is helpful:

along Nevada, there are a bunch of cheapie hotels, but they are just south of the city and north of fort carson - if my memory serves me correctly.

what will you be doing here? is there an area you need to be in? will you have a car or a bike?

there's a lot of ma and pa hotel/motels on w. colorado ave. that might not be too much... especially since tourist season hasn't really started up. look near 'old colorado city' or near downtown or even manitou. if you're west of i-25 you're super close to a lot of outdoorsy areas and in the much better part of town. east and north colorado springs is terrifying, unless you love big box stores, recliners, suv's, arm chair quarterbacks, beating your wife, consumerism, chain restaurants, wearing dirty diapers on your face, being called a ****** while riding your bike, "these colors don't run" bumper stickers, etc.

Wow. Thanks for the advice, I've been through there a few times and I did notice when I crossed into a few sketchy areas.
I'll be in town to attend the Barnett school and although I am driving in, I plan to live by the bike as much as possable. So I guess I'd like to be close to town. A few folks have suggested the Garden of the Gods campgrounds, and it looks nice, just alot to spend on camping. It would be a dream to find someone with a huge peice of land to let me throw my tent in the corner somewhere, but thats the kind of thing you always find when you're there.

Seely: thanks for the offer but I'm rolling through in May and I was kind of looking forward to spending the time in a tent.

By the way: Dirty diapers on your face?

Ha! I used to live in East Colorado Springs, over by Skysox Stadium. It wasn't by choice.

actually, barnetts is sort of right across the street (highway 24 at that point) from a 'good sam' camp ground, which might let you just throw up a tent... there's another camp site on cimmaron/24 and 26th st. barnett's is sort of right off of cimmaron st/highway 24 which parallel's colorado ave. they're like a block apart? somewhere downtown, near old colorado city, or even manitou would be ideal. i'll pm you my phone number.
