I have a kryptonite ny chain with a fahgettiboutit lock. The lock recently jammed and I cannot get it too open. Would it be easier to cut the lock, or the two links it is attached too? Also any advice on the cheapest place to get this done. I was thinking of going to a hardware store.

um, damn. same thing happened to me a while back, and i hacksawed it. but it wasn't a ny chain and a fahgettiboutit lock. so....not too sure.

oh yeah, re-reading that, it sounds like you have the lock at home? much better, though you'll probably still end up needing a new lock. at least you have your bike. but yeah, if you can take it someplace, you ought to be able to get it cut much more easily, and maybe just need a new chain/lock (whichever gets cut, though i'd bet it'll be the lock.)

I do live next two 3 auto body places, maybe I should go there. And yes, the lock is thankfully not attached to my bike.

put a cut-off wheel on your circular saw and cut the lock. will take 2-3 minutes.

Yeah I don't any tools like that to cut it. And yes, I am trying to salvage the chain so I only have to buy a new lock.

Seems like kryptonite should be responsible for replacing the whole thing. I lost the key to a NY LOCK and sent the lock back. They sent me a new lock. I had to pay postage both ways or something like that is cost me $18.

Using a cut-off wheel with a high-speed drill takes less than 10 minutes. Most rechargeable drills are not high speed enough so you will have to use the plugin kind. I cut through the lock portion of one using a drill and cut-off wheel borrowed from my building superintendent, it was easy. Wear goggles or glasses though, it can get a little messy. I put it on the ground and held it in place with my foot. Oh, and wear old shoes if you do that.

hey, why not try it? if it doesn't work, oh well. if it does, you've saved yourself money on a new lock and having someone cut the old one, too.

My lock got all ****ed up on the inside and they told me to send them the lock and they would give me a new one. Instead i just took my spare key, filed down the tooth on the outside of the barrel and got the locked fixed up right, so I didn't need to send it back, but they offered me a new lock in exchange, so I would give it a try.

I e-mailed them about it and they replied within I think three days, sooo, give it a shot.

The only problem with sending it back to them is I lose a lock for probably a month or so. I commute everyday by bike, so thats not really an option. I might send it off, buy a new one and then sell it when I get my old one back.

AfterThisNap beat me to it. Buy an inexpensive grinder like the one shown. After you cut off the lock you can use it for lots of other things.

All the stuff harbor freight sells is super cheap. If you plan on using it more than once, look elsewhere.

The editors at "Cycling Plus" have good quality power tools, not the "nine buck" special. A lock of that quality took about ten minutes and a new blade or two. If you have the key code or registered the lock, you can order a new key from Kryptonite.

According to the "experts" (who came and went from the Forums about a year ago) if your lock uses a round key, you can open it in seconds with a BIC pen. That's what the "experts" claim. All the guys I know that tried the BIC trick failed.

I'm no "expert" lockpicker, but with the older U-Locks, if you molded a BIC pen into the keyhole, it DID work; that's why they came out with the new ones...it took me 2 minutes of pushing and turning the BIC tube to make the key and another 5 seconds to bust open my friends lock.
