Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Do your legs freeze/lock up...

...when you get back on the gears after a few months?

Will I ever enjoy the sublime pleasures of my beloved Raleigh ever again?

No. I went from riding the holland around all day to cruising around on the 3-speed at night with nary a hitch in my giddyup.

It seems to me that I just get a little lazy after riding the geared bike. I find myself riding much longer distances on my roadie lately with much less fatige so I think that riding fixed has done alot for my stamina.

i haven't spent much time on a bike with a freewheel in a while. the only times i have is after fixing one up for someone else and testing it out, taking it around the block. the only problem i've had is feeling like i can't control the bike as well...as far as speed, tight turns (an issue related to speed control), etc.

Yup... its like I forgot how to balance. Or forgetting not to pedal into turns with the lower bottom bracket...

I test rode a Trek 1000 and climbing hills was a bit different. In low gears the front tire was bouncing off the ground. Out of the saddle... on the hood, leaned over the front. Still havent figured that out.

I got back on a roadie, love every second of it.

I barely ride my track bike anymore. But than again I haven't heard Stern & Artie Lange in quite sometime either. F Jackie.

I've been riding my road bike a lot since I built it up. It was a bit of a shock initially, going from my fixie to that. I found my legs didn't quite know how to keep up a circular stroke without a little impetus from the drivetrain, and coasting was a trippy feeling at first.

So far, I love the thing on descents. Riding up to my studio and knowing that half of the trip home will be a nice loooong coast downtown instead of a spinfest from hell is nice. I don't dig it much on climbs, though. Even with the ability to get down to low gears, I missed that feeling of just flying up hills.

Sure, I can make it up some hills with considerable ease that would normally be either an out-of-the-saddle-deathride or a get-off-and-walk situation fixed, but the hills I could normally take sitting down and keep up good speed I find myself spinning up at a much slower clip now.

Fun either way though.

If by "locking up" you mean the goofy way that I coast, ie when I come to a light is always put my right pedal forward exactly how I would if I were skidding to a stop.

I don't lock up, but there's the moment of confusion: "Coasting?" and then the moment of furious backpedaling: "No brakes, no brakes, oh, ****..."
