Mismatched Hubs and Rims
As mentioned in the campy hub thread what is the story with pairing a 36H hub with a 32H rim, or 28H rim? Is that safe to do? I'm just curious, really.

36 hole hubs to 24 hole rims will work fine (skip 1 of 3 and use 2.15 cross calculation). 36 to 28 or 32 will not because your pattern would be anarchy. i rode a front wheel like this for a considerable length of time and it proved very durable.

Yeah, I figured there was some math/lacing pattern stuff that I was ignoring.

I remember Sheldon having info on this somewhere on his site, maybe that you could so any pattern that you could come up with that gives you a regular lacing pattern no matter the number of spokes... but don't quote me on that.
Bam! Gaaaalic. With specific reference to 28H and 36H rim.

I'd recommend a crow's foot or radial pattern for situations like that... Not radial if it's the rear, of course. No experience, just mathematical speculation.
