Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

san diego fixies

hey, I'm going to be in San Diego in a week and was wondering if there were any fixed gear shops or riders out there...I'm visiting my parents in North County, and am vacillating whether to ship my bike to ride while I'm out there...

I looked at some of the rental operations and they were $55 a day...

Or...alternately...anyone out there know of thrift stores that might have cheap bikes?

thx,
Mike in KC

Try calling Ye Old Bicycle Shop in the Lemon Grove area. Good luck.

Adams Avenue bike shop is fixie friendly. It's near the downtown area though.

Also try good will. almost sold my specialized road bike to a guy who ended up buying a cheap bike for $25 bucks at good will.

also, if your here during Tuesday. Definitely check out the weekly track races at the San Diego Velodrome near Balboa Park. It starts around 5:30pm-8:30pm. Folks usually bring a few beers to kick back. Good chance you'll meet some of the wrenches from Adam Avenue bike shop as well as the owner.

You are going to be completely spoiled by our weather, and never want to leave.

I second Adams Avenue bikes, they're a heavy single-speed place, but they're all new... Bianchi, Surly, Specialized. I also like Cal Coast, a few of the employees ride fixed, but it's more of a Giant/Ellsworth roadie/mtb shop, with a few Fujis.

I live in North County, where do your parents live? Come ride bikes with my friends and I! I've got an old KHS "winner" I could fix up for you as long as I could get it back before you leave.

Wow. They live in Penasquitos (I say they only because I haven't lived there for 17 years...)

I think I would ride a 56 cm, as my Bianchi Pista is a 60, but I keep the seat pretty low. I could probably ride something smaller for a while.

I saw Adams Avenue, and I may stop by to check them out. Of course I'm going from Thursday to Monday, but might drive down to the velodrome Saturday morning to check it out.

I'll be in town May 4-8.

thanks for all the replies.
