Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? who has good prices/selection on quill stems?

I need a shortish quill stem with a 26mm clamp diameter. I don't want to spend a lot of money, and I want the classic style since it's going on a late 70s bike.

Nashbar has cheap and ugly Modolos, and I might just break down and buy one since the price is right, but I was hoping for something a little more classic. I was surprised, there are not even that many on ebay, especially once I weed out all the 25.4mm stems.

Anyway, does anyone have any good sources for quill stems?

Don't even get me started about Rivendell. They charge you a membership fee for the privelege of buying from then, and still charge more than the compettition.

All they sell is those ridiculously tall periscope-like Technomics, and their member price is $2 more than Harris. I might be able to get a technomic down low enough since I've got a long headtube, but I'm not looking for a $40 stem that might work.

Thanks anyway though. I do appreciate the suggestion. I like some of Rivendells stuff, but it's always pricey, and their membership bull really annoys me.

Try aebike.com.

Edit: Sorry, looks like their only one inch quills are Technomic.

This sounds like a job for eBay. I got one a 3TTT like what you're looking for for $5.

Yeah, after looking around it's clear my best options are used stuff on ebay, or the Ugly Modolos for $10 if I get impatient.

Thanks for the input.

I also got a sweet TTT with loads of drop for about $5 from Ebay. You might have to wait for one no-ones noticed, but there are bargains.

Ben's Bikes on ebay has some nice SR's for like $10. However they may be 25.4. You can also look at Cinelli 1A's on Ebay which you can get pretty short and they are beautiful but 26.4 or whatever silly size Cinelli used to use but I bet you can shim them to fit 26 no problem. They are really sweet.

So I stopped into my LBS without much hope that they would have what I was looking for. What a pleasant surprise. we rooted through a bin of old stems and came up with a 90mm Cineli stem for $10. Sweet!

god, who the hell writes html for yellowjersey? someone with a cataract on dope?

getting nice looking quill stem is difficult nowadays... i searched high and low and ended up getting a spare from a friend. he said he gets them from Cyclart--the bike restorer/refinisher people (in CA?). apparently they have a nice stash of used and NOS stuff

ebay. I got a older 90mm 3ttt stem for $10 or something.
if you do a search for "stem" under "parts & accessories" you'll find like 12 pages of stems. (you can weed out the threadless with "quill stem", but you'll miss some as they aren't all listed as quill stems...)

Damn, what's with all of us getting 3TTTs on eBay?

Stems are one of the few things that eBay will really be a bargain for, as long as you're not too particular about what you want.

I really like those, but they tend to be long and 25.4mm, so they are not right for this application

They came in all sizes and most the road stems are 26.0. These stems are no longer made but can be had on ebay quite often.

Those are nice too:

and short!

are you sure that cinelli isn't 26.4mm?

try IRO - tony's got nitto dynamics for $29 (though they might be 90 degrees)

Yup I'm sure. it's stamped 26.

I thought about the dynamics. generally I don't like the looks of 90 quill stems, but it would have worked in this case. $10 is way better though, no waiting for shipping, and this stem is exactly what I wanted, not a compromise.
