Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

thebikebiz.com (and USPS)

So last week i ordered some of those sweet Nitto 021 bullhorns from these guys. They shipped it out via USPS. I tracked the package online. On monday, USPS "attempted" delivery unsuccessfully and "left a notice." On Tuesday, USPS "delivered" the handlebars. Thing is, no one in the building mail center, building management office, my office, or security desk has any knowledge of the package coming in or of any notice that was left on monday or tuesday... I went down to the post office to see if they could tell me who delivered the package or who received it. In my profession (investigator for the dept of labor) i deal with postal workers a lot. Never in my life have i experienced people that have the attitude of, and behave as postal workers. And i mean ALL of them. I have never met one that didn't have an attitude problem. I, similarly, have never met one whose work ethic went beyond a "if your package is in arms reach, i'll get it, otherwise you're SOL." So basically, I've been forced to accept that USPS will never locate my handlebars.

Anyway, to get to the point, i was in contact with two people at thebikebiz.com (Bob Rolke and Marty Woy) and have to grade them an A+ in service. Marty has been shooting emails back and forth within like 30-45 minutes of my questions and updates. They thanked me for my efforts in tracking down the package and are shipping me out another bar. Furthermore, they no longer offer USPS shipping and deal exclusively with UPS (+1 for them learning from mistakes). I'd deal with them again without reservation.... just to let y'all know.

USPS will usually leave a package if it is not delivery confirmation or insured. I actually prefer this because I am not usually home when the mailman arrives. It's a convienence, because I am a 5 minute ride away from the post office and I live in a nice neighborhood. I also prefer USPS because it's far less expensive than UPS or Fedex's 2/3 day delivery options.

This sounds fishy, because if they leave one notice, they're should leave an additional notice on the second day and then return it to the Post Office on the third day for you to pick up.

Marty and Bob gave great customer service when I ordered my bars.

It was delivery confirm (hence the tracking). I don't have stuff delivered to my home for precisely this reason (no one is ever there to accept). The problem here was that USPS said they left a notice and said they delivered the package, but i cannot find anyone who can confirm this. No one in the mail room has seen a notice or package. All USPS will do is say, "it was delivered." The price difference between USPS (2-3 day? ha you wish) and UPS ground (not necessarily 2-3 days but reliable) really isn't all that different and i'll happily give up a buck to have someone actually deliver my items. Also, if the package was at the post office, i'd have it now (i went there)

that really blows... I ordered the same bars from the same place. and the shipping took almost a week. I was, however, home to accept the package.

i generally get very good service and a helpful and polite attitude from USPS workers in my area. i think it might be a geographical thing.

A friend of mine had the same problem with USPS. I have had the same issue with FedEx, including them claiming that no-one was home twice when I was in fact home.

I happily pay the extra dollar or two for UPS. No BS, just my stuff getting delivered.

Check the parking lot/bike rack to make sure your bars aren't sitting on somebody else's ride. My experience with Postal workers tells me that they are more than stupid enough to 'liberate' something and then try to pass it off as their own.

I am a postal worker, and if it didn't require so much work to type I would flame you all.

fedex screwed me by leaving a package outside in brooklyn behind garbage cans and the delivery man then lied about where he put stuff, after having written it down on the notice. i tried to contact the company i ordered my tires from (bikesomewhere.com) because they are the ones who have to file a claim, and they haven't responded to me after 3 attempts.

I worked at Fedex for 6 months, and I try to NOT get fedex shipping if I can. Of course, UPS is probably similar, but at least I haven't seen what goes on inside there.

Just wanted to say that the Bicycle Business is one of my LBS's and it's an excellent shop. So it doesn't surprise me that they were right on top of this issue and trying to make it right even though it wasn't their fault.

Exactly the reason I'll never eat Jimmy Dean brand sausage.

I try to stay out of the food business....Ignorance!

A fellow student of mine worked at Taco Bell for awhile, and the beef they would get in had "Grade D but edible" stamped on the side. Chalupas are so darn good though, it has been tough the break the habit.
