Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bike Stolen recently (Philly, orange fixed)

DAAAAAAMMIT people were moving out of my apartment and left the door open. Someone must've grabbed the bike out of the apartment.

It's an orange fixed gear bike, with Sugino RD's, home-made double toe straps (one is Silva), formula/alex R390 rims, Nitto bullhorns with black bar tape.

Pleaaaaase buy it from whoever is selling it. Reward will be given!!

Adam

The bike looks like this except it now has black bar tape and the toe straps are different. It also doesn't have the bandana anymore.

That sucks. Post pictures if you have any. Keep your eyes on craigslist, but I wouldn't advise posting anything there about your bike being stolen.

If you post about your bike being stolen, it might stop someone from trying to sell your bike there.

On the other hand, you could potentially increase the number of people out there keeping an eye out for your bike.

So I guess the real question is: do the potential benefits of posting on cl outweigh the costs? Cl can be pretty sketchy, so I'm not sure. However, I think you have a better chance of reaching an honest crowd of people by posting your stolen bike in cycling forums.

It's up to you though, hopefully you'll get it back one way or another.

I'll keep my eye out... hope you get it back! People always think I'm way overparanoid about locking my bike, but these threads remind me I'm not.

i feel for you. i had an orange bike stolen from me last august. very painful. in the months following i would pull up right behind anyone riding an orange bike and prepare to give them my samuel l. jackson speech, but it was never the right bike. i gotta tell you, though, renters insurance really did take the sting off. it's totally worth it. anyone out there riding a bike they love should have it. i had a bianchi touring conversion that i'd built up and to replace the parts i put on it, many from swap meets, ebay and the like, i was able to produce quotes for comparable components and end up with a pretty decent upgrade. still miss that bike though.

ive been thinking about renters insurance... it only applies if your bike (or other stuff) is stolen out of your house right?

i would post something on philly's courier homepage. i think its www.phillybma.com.
my bike was stolen awhile back, and my friend dennis (who's a courier) saw it while working and got it back. if anyone's going to recognize and have a good chance of seeing it, it's the guys (and ladies) who ride the streets all day everyday!

worth a shot. sorry about your bike, i know what it feels like. sucks.

you should file a police report asap. if, say, you see someone riding your bike, and you want it back, a police report is the only way to confirm that it's stolen property. especially if the other person paid good money for it off the street and wants to call the cops b/c some crazy ass mf is demanding he/she give up their new bike.
i *think*, and i may be wrong on this, but i think renters insurance applies outside the home. my bike was stolen from the hallway of my apt., but i would have been covered if it were in the back yard, locked up on the stoop, etc. still, totally worth it.

Going to file a police report now...

I'm also going to bring a picture (hopefully this color laser printer pic will turn out well)...

+1 to renter's insurance.
Mine covers my bikes if they're let pretty much anywhere. At work, home, etc. I'm not sure about locked on the street though, but I think it's covered there too.
I hope I'll never have to use it, knock on wood, but I sleep better knowing it's there.

I have renter's insurance through State Farm. I have a friend who works for them. I can get you his contact if you want to.
