Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

what have i got myself into?

I bought a bike today. !977 Paramount Track bike. fixed gear, all original Campy NR componets. Thought I'd surf around here to get a few tips on actually riding it. Now looking at the threads, I'm afraid I've wondered into some bizarre cult. A voice in the back of my head keeps saying don't drink the Kool Aid.

first of all, people usually don't let you say things like this:
"!977 Paramount Track bike. fixed gear, all original Campy NR componets"
without providing pictures...
congrats. sounds like a verrrrry nice ride.

Thanks. It's been hanging in the back of the local LBS, and ridden very occassionally by the Owner. Mostly just planning on riding it a bit, particularly in the base phase to work on my spin. I'd like to ride it on a Velodrome sometime just to try it out, but closest is either Miami or Atlanta, both about 6 hours. And I hope it appreciates, but it wasn't the main reason to buy it, and I'm not going to let that get in the way of riding it.

I'm thinking about putting a Campy Record front brake on it with a Campy Record lever, for consistency's sake. Although, I like the minimalist cable routing of the way it's set up now.

gorgeous bike. and thank god you didn't say you got it for $300.

campy brake yes (i have a period correct record caliper you can have, btw, pm me)
lever no, cause it would look awful on there.

riding brakeless is more fun, btw. amazing how strange it feels riding a geared bike after riding brakeless fixed only for a long time—the inability to modulate speed in the same motion as creating it is very odd, the dead spot in the rotation even with clips etc.

That is definitely a collector's item, close to mint. If it were wine, I would lay it down, as they say.

But I can't have toys like that because I would go out and ride it on the track and crash it, or ding it up in the trunk of my car going to and from the track.
