knee braces

due to having had some injury (fractured femur) + surgery (metal plate #3! 6 million dollar man here I come) to my left leg in the past I've been experiencing a little knee pain ever since. It hasn't gotten worse due to riding, (and i just changed my seat height AGAIN to make things a bit more comfortable) so I'm deffinately not gonna slow down, but I was wondering if anyone had experience riding with a knee brace and if it made things more comfortable or was it just a pain in the ass. Also recommendations of specific ones would be nice.

Yeah, you can get stuff like that at any corner pharmacy.
I used to use one like that for running without any issue so I imagine the same should be true for cycling.

Hard to say, one of those mind over matter things possibly.
They're usually pretty tight so it feels good and supportive and as if everything is being held in place.
I don't/didn't have anywhere near the level of leg injuries that you have so it's hard to say how it'll work for you. But, for how inexpensive those things are, it can't hurt to try.

I've had two knee surgeries, one of them being for my ACL. The Doc said that braces really don't do much, if anything, and are more comforting than practical. I don't know if that's true or not, but that's what he said.

my damage happened up by my hip, but i think my knee has had to over compensate a little for a busted upper femur and having a weak groin (oh that sounds wrong) and a thigh I couldnt use for 6 weeks... I think it'll work itself out, its only been about 6 months since i messed myself up. Sounds like I might be better off just saving my money.

i have a super good knee brace, family heirloom...just adds a nice solid support to knee structure while riding. i used it wheni went down hard on my knee and passed it onto peep who tweeked his acl. every comfortable.
also i found that riding with knees turned in closer to TT gives better advantage to stronger muscles in the legs. give that a shot as well.

re: allergies.

i would avoid latex in anything that you plan on wearing steadily. people can develop latex allergies due to steady/frequent exposure over time. and the allergies are a pain, and you always have to look a little harder for safer sex supplies that you can use... and nurses and doctors always have to rummage around for nitrile gloves.

I used to wear one regularly towards the end of my hardcore skating days after which I switched to some half-pipes and more ramp skating. I also used it when I did some off-roading/mtb-ing.

I'll agree that it keeps your knees more rigid and supported -- it feels more "locked in". I use a neoprene knee brace similar to #2 but a bit more minimal than that even.

These days I rarely feel it though on some days I do and I've been watching my knees closely and since riding fixed haven't used a knee brace yet... however I do use knee warmers for the compression factor and to keep my knees warm if it's below 75 degrees. That sounds like a pretty warm temperature for knee warmers but they really do feel good afterwards.

I'd also suggest taking a look at compression knee straps made for American Football as they're a little thinner -- Nike has some I believe and any wal-sport-mart should have that kind of thing.

If this is something you have a genuine concern about, time to awaken your health insurance and get it checked out. I was going to "wait" on a knee surgery, and in the time frame, re-injured my knee two times - in addition to the original injury. Yuck. Five aspirations later, I wound up in the OR and now have a new (well, new back in 95) ACL and a lighter knee! 75% of my meniscal cartiledge is in a landfill somewhere, or perhaps someone's designer soap.
So, for those of you that have KNEE injuries:
During the cooler months, I try to ride with a simple neoprene brace to keep the joint nice and warm and limber. As long as I remember to do that, I usually have no problem. Now, if my winter months are semi-dormant (like these past ones due to student teaching), I really need to watch how I get back into riding. If I go to fast, the knee lets me know, and I try to ramp down a bit to let it wind up with the rest of my body.
That is one of the key points here in seeking proper medical attention: listen to what your body is saying in regards to areas that have been repaired. Everyone is different when it comes to recovery and dealing with rehab. Make sure that if it is persistant, you get the help you need from the proper channels. A knee brace might help, but if the knee is compensating, you should be looking to other parts of your leg for the problem and ultimately the solution via strengthening, etc. And if you feel the opinion and treatment you received is not resolving the issue, request a second one. Knees are like chains on a track bike: take care of them and they will allow you to move around smoothly.

I would hate to see yet another "selling my bike as I cannot ride anymore due to injury."
