Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Murray USA Monterey ???

Hi,

I'm a newbie here. I haven't been on a bike in many years. I bought one this weekend at a garage sale. It looks like an older bike. It's a single/fixed speed with pedal brakes. I'm having a hard time finding out anything about it. It's a....

It needs a little TLC, but is in pretty good condition. I'm hoping to fix it up a little and have it to ride for fun and exercise. I live out in the country, and have lots of long country roads to ride on. They're all white rock roads though. So, I'm wondering about tires. If anyone has any suggestions or advice, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks!,
Jessy

Hey Jessy. This was actually my first bike here in Gainesville. It is a single speed/coaster brake'd cruiser, right? I bought mine for forty dollars. It was blue.

The wheels will use 26" tires and tubes. If you're staying mostly on semi-rough roads I'd suggest a nice fat tire, pretty much as big as you can find without having too bumpy of a tread. (If there's lots of little "knobs" on the tires then the bike will feel like its vibrating when you're riding on solid/smooth road.)

I'd also suggest posting this in either the General Cycling or perhaps Commuting or Touring forums.

Happy riding!

That's it!

Yes, that sounds like the bike! Mine's blue too. Here it is.....

Thanks for the info on tires and tubes. I think the only other thing it may need is a new chain. There's only a few tiny rust spots on the bike itself (the frame). However, the chain looks pretty bad. I think I'd be better off getting a new one. How do I know what size to get? Are they very hard to switch out?

Thanks again for the advice!,

you can just ask for a 3/32" chain made for a single-speed bike. or just ride your bike to the store where you buy one! another option would be to order online, someone here could point you in the right direction. you need a special tool for installing and removing the chain, but they are inexpensive and can be purchased along with a chain. Total for everything should be around $20.

and you're right about the frame - a few rust spots won't hurt anything at all

The next purchase I would suggest is some good lights if you plan to ride around at night.
