Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

the megabus is go!

just had to share...
the megabus, which we all cursed for the "no bikes" policy, happily took my completely built, unboxed bike this weekend. in fact, the woman that opened the cargo door on the bus for me said, "yeah, a bus came up on this run, too!"

now, this doesn't mean that every driver of every bus will be as accomodating. but i'd say try it, act like it's perfectly normal an acceptable, and if all else fails, carry some cash for bribing the driver.

$10 RT to milwaukee is faaaar cheaper than driving. And I'll be loading my touring rig onto the megabus to minneapolis in a week. woo hoo!

the megabus is go!

every time i have used it(which is almost every other weekend) they didnt say anything. plus the fact that hardly anyone ever rides on it gives you more room and they shouldnt complain.

I emailed them asking about a bag that is 47x32x6 (Nashbar soft case bag) and they said it's fine. So I was planning on doing that.

But you guys are saying that you just roll your bike right on in one piece? Maybe i'll just do that.

I think I'll at least box mine the next time I head out to Chicago...

So what sorts of debauchery are planned while you're here?

the 2 times I've rode the megabus, there's been no more than 15-20 people on the bus, and 2 of the 3 cargo spaces were completely empty. I'm sure the official prohibition of bikes is for those crazy cases when the bus is actually full.

2 questions though:

1) do you really just throw your bike in an empty cargo compartment, or do you partially disassemble it or something? I'd worry about mine sliding around and getting all beat up either way.

2) how the hell does the megabus make any money?!
